Open roles spotlight: Experience Foundations

We’re hiring for many roles at Gusto — and you should consider those roles! — but the Experience Foundations team is a little different so I wanted to elaborate on the team’s charter and unique opportunity we have.

If you’ve ever thought “we need to think about this [complex UX problem] across all of our product surfaces to find a systemic solution” but never had the time to do so; if you’ve ever worked with a design system and felt that there’s a critical experience layer that’s missing in between the components; if you ever wished you could update the foundational architecture of the product you work on — keep reading!

What is Experience Foundations?

Gusto is a people-platform that makes it easier for businesses to pay, insure, and support their teams. People are critical to our mission, so our user-experience needs to support them to support their teams. Gusto’s platform has grown an impressive amount over the years, but we haven’t had a team that could step back and design how those different product offerings should interoperate across a cohesive people platform.

That’s where we come in! Our work is the global experience strategy layer that sits squarely between product teams and our design system. We’re a fairly new team at Gusto with an exciting, experience-led charter. Though we are still building the team, this work is a priority for Gusto with critical executive support to ensure the success of our design-led mission.

What does the work look like?

Our work is the global experience strategy layer that sits squarely between product teams and our design system.

There are two sides to our mission: tactical work that immediately improves the experiences today and strategic work that is defining where the product needs to go. Addressing our experiences from either end of the spectrum helps inform the other half — and why we intentionally work on both.

Recently, we launched a project that refactored the experience our customers land on when they log into Gusto. We appropriately “re-homed” a lot of clutter that distracted from our customers’ core tasks and thoughtfully prioritized the tasks they needed to do.

Now, we’re focused on building the navigation, information architecture, and discovery patterns for our entire platform — taking a holistic approach to what has historically been localized solutions. I believe that it’s the work that many designers dream of doing but never have the support to do, which is what makes this opportunity at Gusto so special.

These are challenging and ambiguous problems but they are really exciting ones for designers who love systems and strategy work. A designer on this team wears many hats to think about critical user experience problems using a variety of outcomes and from a big picture mindset. We also work with all of our product teams to mentor, coach, and provide feedback from our unique horizontal perspective.

  • Thrive in ambiguous, complex, and systemic problems that span across organizations;
  • Have a broad toolkit and enjoy employing a variety of methods;
  • Understand the importance of strong communication and collaboration to effectively roll-out frameworks;
  • Love both design systems and product design work and want to work at the intersection of the two
