Guyana-Born Actors Standout in ‘Black Panther’ Superhero Film
Letitia Wright and Shaunette Renée Wilson are among several Caribbean actors who delivered notable performances in the Hollywood blockbuster.
Shuri, the smart, clever younger sister of King T’Challa, is played by Letitia Wright. She was born in Guyana but moved to the UK as a child and grew up in London.
Letitia’s popularity has skyrocketed since the release of the movie; her image has found its way on the front page of more than a hundred magazines and newspapers in various languages worldwide. Ironically, while the world wrote about this amazing Guyanese actress her name had never made it into the mainstream news media in Guyana, until now.
Despite this, Ms. Wright continues to acknowledge that she is a Guyanese by birth, and in almost every one of her interviews, she always gave credit to her country Guyana, while indicating that she would like to help improve the country where she came from.
Linden born, New-York based Shaunette Renée Wilson also appears in the critically acclaimed Black Panther movie. Shaunette was born in Guyana but raised in New York from the age of two, and attended the Yale School of Drama.
Shaunette is best known for her roles on Showtime’s Billions opposite Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti (2016), and currently starring opposite Manish Dayal, Matt Czuchry and Bruce Greenwood in The Resident, Fox’s (2018) medical drama pilot produced by Antoine Fuqua.
