If you are a soccer fan in the upstate, or are even soccer-curious, there is no better time that this weekend to dive in head first to the Greenville soccer scene. With two home matches on deck, and two UEFA Champions League Final viewing parties, there is plenty to experience over the coming days.
But maybe you are on the fence. Maybe you are not sure if you like soccer. Maybe you are not sure if you should or could support more than one team in Greenville. Maybe you do not know if it will be any fun. Let me take a few paragraphs to convince you. These are the reasons you need to get yourself out into the Greenville soccer-sphere this weekend!
The Weather is going to be PERFECT!
Ok, so it will probably be hot. Let’s point out the obvious that it is summer in the south and it will likely be hot for the next few months. But THAT is not a reason to miss out on some of the best, and least expensive, entertainment around town.
The good news is there is no rain in the forecast this weekend and that means tailgates and games are going to be full-go this weekend. So drink plenty of water, lather on the sunscreen, and get yourself out to one, or all, of the events this weekend.
UEFA Champions League English Showdown
Liverpool and Tottenham are set to face off in the championship of the arguably biggest tournament in club soccer. The best clubs in Europe have battled all season and it has come down to two of England’s top clubs.
Last season Liverpool lost in the final against Real Madrid, but they are hoping they can secure a trophy this year against their league foe Tottenham. There are certainly plenty of fans of both teams in the upstate, but there are plenty more fans who will be watching for the drama and quality that always comes out in this final.
There are currently two watch parties scheduled in the upstate. One will be taking place at 13 Stripes Brewery in Taylors and the other will be at the Reedy River Riot tailgate happening prior to the Greenville Triumph match on Saturday.
Whether you are a fan of either avian-inspired English team, this match is a must-watch! And if you must watch it, why not do it with other soccer fans in the upstate! Plus, both events are FREE!
Greenville FC looks to stay undefeated
Greenville FC is currently undefeated and sitting atop the Southeast Conference in the NPSL with a record of 2–0–2. They have also been extremely impressive at their new home, Sirrine Stadium, this season.
In their first home match they battled back from a 2–0 deficit to rivals Asheville City to walk away with a draw on a rainy night in the upstate. Last week, they absolutely embarrassed Inter Nashville by putting on an absolute show for the home fans with a 6–0 victory.
This team is so fun to watch and they look to have taken a massive leap forward in their sophomore season. Sirrine is a great place to watch a match and the Mill Town Operatives have the pre-game scene locked down.
This week FC welcomes Atlanta SC, formerly the Silverbacks, to Sirrine and will likely put on quite a show against a team that currently sits fifth (out of six) in the conference.
Greenville Triumph face rival Tormenta for the third time this season
The first two meetings between league rivals Greenville Triumph and South Georgia Tormenta have been historic. In the first match, Tormenta notched a 1–0 victory in the first ever match in USL League One history. The last time these two met it was in the first round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and Greenville was able to get the 1–0 victory that go around.
Now the Ibises from Statesboro bring their second-place team to Legacy Field to take on the Triumph. Both matches between these two have been full of excitement, and both have gotten chippy at times. This matchup is sure to be an entertaining one.
If you have not been to a Triumph match yet this season, or if you have come right at kickoff, you have likely missed out on one of the coolest things that the team offers each week: Fan Fest.
Fan Fest is a completely free (meaning you do not even have to have a ticket to the match) event that happens right across the street from Legacy Field and features live music, food trucks, soccer darts, faceprinting, and more. This is the perfect spot to pregame if you have kids because there is so much to do and experience to get them excited about the team and the sport.
Experience it ALL for as cheap as $20
The Champions League watch parties are free. The Greenville Triumph Fan Fest is free. General Admission tickets for Greenville FC are $5 for youth and $12 for adults (those can be purchased HERE). The Greenville Triumph sell Standing Room Only tickets for $8, but obviously have other seated options at different price points (their tickets can be purchased HERE).
In theory, an adult could attend everything this weekend for $20. Kids would be even cheaper. There is no place in town to get four hours of live and exciting entertainment, plus more if you count the watch parties, at that price point.
But don’t take my word for it. Come and see. I promise you won’t regret it! And if you find me at one of the games, I might just have a freshly minted GVLSoccer.com sticker for you!
