Design Process: What is Gweniese?
I don’t write, document, or comprehend my process. I will admit I constantly change my process daily. Why do I keep changing? Because I value productivity and creativity. This article is me, if you want to learn more about productivity.
Process is different for every assignment, yet there is a high-level flow how to attempt to solve an assignment:
- Understand the assignment… may require you to do some technical research
- Explain it to someone else… can your end user understand it?
- Visualize it with the user’s expectation in mind
- Review findings with the company…. walk them through possible realistic edge cases… could be bad or good.
- The company decides if the assignment is stopped or will continue on to development
- Work with Development to maintain the UX
- Release it in the wild… get feedback
- Over time learn what happen after the release and make refinements… (back to step 1)
This is the basic understanding how to build products but I will admit different teams of people will handle it in many ways. Process is not about one way…I mean to say, process is not right or wrong. Like Art, process is in the eye of the beholder.
My creativity helps me with step 1 to 4 because I love to strategize the best experience and only focus a small group of engineers to work on projects they can deliver in such meaningful connections with the consumer.
Many times I will visualize my technical research or experience models like the illustrations below. My strength is divergent thinking and I will constantly draw myself with a thought bubble that will question a concept right on the spot. Of course all my co-workers will see it and chuckle but these thoughts help me to dive deeper into multiple branches of scenario or UI layouts. Yup, I can be a little pessimist when I think of everything that can go wrong. And yet, I do flip the coin optimistically thinking of everything that is great and how the company could build the greatest in the future!
[hr]I could talk about Design Thinking… Visual Thinking… Creative Thinking… Design Sprints… There are tons of articles (read some indi young) out there to help you discover it. Realizing no process is the best process for every company, so be mindful and learn the rhythm of a company’s heart.
For example, Google announced their design sprints which is a one week of grabbing a handful of designers, developers, and other specialists into a room to define an assignment’s problem. This is great! Although, there are two issue… not many companies have 20+ UX designers or 20+ developers and a big budget to get focus groups in the same day…. Or if a company did had that many people… probably the company’s schedule will not allow them 40 hours to do this design sprint.
Thinking holistically, a company is based on business, development, and marketing. With the right balance across all three and that these teams listen to each other, can lead to great products. But I don’t really know any company excelling all three, maybe Amazon?… Food and general good companies definitely understand the business and marketing (ie Coca-cola.) While Tech company rely on their development side (Samsung.) And there are those sharks that only care about business (Wall Street.)
I exclude Apple because they focus on a niche consumer back in 2000s and it help them. I will admit innovation is a chance of knowing the opportunities, just like Samsung got their chance with their Galaxy S… LG was not… I was there in the company when that happen. BOOM! That experience taught me a lot about tech business.
