Garage Doors Open

This weekend, I experienced one of the cornerstones of CrossFit: a community event. The Garage held the “Garage Doors Open” event, which raised money for a local charity, and challenged local athletes (from the Garage and beyond) with three intense WODs. Due to constraints beyond my control (my body was sore) I sat out, but I did get to watch veteran and novice CrossFitters compete.

Here’s something I noticed though: whether you were a veteran or a novice, the support was equally intense. It didn’t matter if you were doing scaled or Rx’d (new word alert) workouts, competitors and spectators alike cheered you on passionately. It wasn’t about lifting the heaviest weight, or getting the shortest time. The applause originated from a place of accomplishment, and since everyone pushed themselves as far as they possibly could, everyone was equally impressive.

Rounding up before the first WOD.

Witnessing this was kind of a game changer for me in my attitude towards CrossFit, but also let me recognize that I was on the right track. I’ve been pushing myself to be better, mostly for the sense of satisfaction I would get from “nailing it”. The CrossFitters I saw on Saturday, though, found their satisfaction in giving their all.

While my form may take some time to achieve, it doesn’t mean I can’t be giving my all. Who knows, maybe the next time The Garage hosts an event, I’ll be competing too?
