Resist the Squish

Now, I don’t mean to brag (okay, maybe a little), but according to the image below I am no longer an “immature squatter”. I’m about a quarter of the way through the fundamentals program at The Garage, and I’m starting to sense some progress. More importantly than that, I actually feel a sense of accomplishment.

The fundamentals coach, Tim, has a way with words. It could be his catch phrases that motivate me (i.e. “Resist the squish” — that’s hilarious, right?), but I think it also has to do with his occasional reminders that working out isn’t just about fitness. Tenacity is a life skill, and just like how the movements in crossfit are meant to improve your fitness in everyday life, the attitude I maintain in the workout can translate into less sweaty times of my day as well. As I finished a half-Karen with only a 12-lb ball, it was this reminder that pushed me through.

This morning, I read an article about the importance of developing “authentic grit”. I’m at a point in my life where I’m starting a lot of new things that are meant to carry on for most of my life. Maintaining positivity, determination, and vision are critical — and crossfit honestly seems like as good of a physical exercise as it is a mental one.

Someone told me that my goals in the last blog were closer to milestones than actual goals. A goal should be something measurable, while a milestone is an event that occurs marking the accomplishment of something. Fair enough! I’m sticking to my milestones, and maybe I’ll set some goals along the way. Step by step, I’ll resist the squish.
