Squatting on the Trails

The GymNext office is in Penetanguishene, Ontario, which is very close to the Awenda Provincial Park. I decided that over the long weekend I would get to know my new surroundings, and Awenda sounded like a great place to start! I arrived early Saturday and spent most of my time hiking and swimming — a perfect summer weekend.

If you’ve ever hiked, you know that it’s a great opportunity to let your mind wander. Normally, I’ll listen to some music or chat with whoever I’m with. This weekend, however, I found myself doing something completely different — thinking about my squat.

Tim, my fundamental’s trainer, informed me that I should work on my squat because it is “immature”. As the trails fell behind me, I began to think about everything I had learned last week. I started thinking about the new vocabulary, whether or not I’d eventually nail the movements, and finally: why do I suck so much at squatting?

What I imagine I looked like.

I’m a fairly competitive person, but this is a bit much for even me. I’m supposed to be enjoying the outdoors, and I’m literally stopping along the trail and squatting. I even stopped my friends and asked them to watch. I was out of control — but I need to get these squats right! They are the basis of so many movements in CrossFit, and I can’t stand not being good at them. I eventually got my shit together and moved on, but when I came back to work on Tuesday, I told Duane about what happened. What he said scared me: “Wait until you take the broomstick out at home and practice your cleans.”

I wouldn’t actually go that far though — right?
