Do you know the effect machine shutdowns and conversions have on the paper and board market balance in the coming 5 years?

In Europe alone, one-third of paper and paperboard machines or over 600 machines have been shut down since 2000. Some machines have been shut down as they have reached their technological age. Since 2005, a large number of machines have been shut down because the markets that they served have been declining heavily leading to fierce cost competition and/or protection of margins by large corporations.

Our latest report is focusing on those closed machines in mature markets (NA and Europe) between 2015–2020. How many of the machines have been exited or converted into new targeted business segments? What is the new converted capacity/size? What effect have the new conversions on the market balance today and in the future until 2024?

Global paper and board markets grew steadily until the financial crisis in 2008, which caused demand to drop by 5% in 2009. Until 2008, growth averaged 2,3%. Since then growth has slowed down, averaging 0,3%pa for the period until 2019. Since 2015, there has been virtually no growth, the 2019 volume was slightly above 2015 volume, at 405 million tonnes vs 404 million tonnes.
