Monthly Roundup for Holo & Holochain
Welcome to our monthly roundup — March edition, as always I’m bringing you the scoop of the month. If you have been reading the regular updates we share in Telegram or Twitter, you probably already know that we’ve now got a working Elemental Chat application and that we are hard at work preparing the Holochain and Holo infrastructure so that we can release it to all hosts. We are almost there! The big news this month was Holo being granted a patent for Holochain Distributed App Framework.
If you’re wondering what exactly we’ve been working on at Holo and Holochain this past month — the wait is over! Let’s jump right in.
Press Release: U.S. Patent granted for Holochain Distributed App Framework
In a big step forward for the P2P web, Holo Limited was granted a US patent for the rrDHT networking innovations within Holochain. rrDHT is a peer-to-peer networking design implemented in Holochain that describes a system of nodes communicating according to a relaxed, agent-centric distributed hash table.

How rrDHT Works: A Tech Deep Dive
Unpacking the technology behind Holochain’s secure P2P networking. This week we got word that a patent we submitted to the USPTO was approved. That means that Holochain’s special DHT design — rrDHT — is covered under intellectual property laws.

Dev Tools in the Works
Mostly we’re working on performance, bugfixes, and features (proxy server, storage code, sharding, and validation receipts), but we’re also working on a few developer tools: the hc
command (yes, it’s coming back), a mock HDK, and a nearly finalised hApp bundle spec.

Elemental Chat Gets Freshened Up
This week we rolled out an update to all HoloPorts. The most visible changes are in the UI of Elemental Chat, our demo app. Users now have ‘identicons’ beside their name; these auto-generated avatars are based on their actual agent ID in the Holochain network and can’t be forged. This is important because usernames are just labels; you can set yours to anything you like, even someone else’s name. If you’re talking to a friend and suddenly their identicon looks slightly different, there’s a good chance someone is trying to impersonate your friend.

Decentralized Next-level Collaboration Apps with Syn
My passion for Holochain has always been sourced in upgrading our collective intelligence, which means making it easier and more joyful to collaborate together. In early December, Art and I sketched out, in an afternoon, a generalized pattern on Holochain for real-time collaborative apps like Google docs where you can type in the same document as others simultaneously, and see their cursor moving around.

Moving HoloFuel up on the Roadmap
Yes, you read that right! We are actually ahead of where we expected to be in some ways. While it is taking a while to complete infrastructure testing because that is one of the most complex aspects of our work, we have been able to move many other activities forward. Because of that we decided to shift the HoloFuel application up in the roadmap. Here is what it looks like with the new changes. Check it out on our website where you will find more details.

Our community and events team is working tirelessly to bring people together and create amazing things on Holochain. As always, we would like to give our appreciation to all the community organisers without whom it would be not possible to create this magic! Many events are conducted virtually to respect the #SocialDistancing, so nothing is stopping you to participate!
