Week 6 Customer Discovery

Goals:

Our original problem statement was that Coast Guard Operations Specialists need a way to track vessels in order to achieve more successful interdictions of drug cartels. We found after interviews and showing our MVP of a common operating picture that our beneficiaries most valued the features of predictive modeling of enemy locations and asset schedule visualizations. Hence we’re now deciding between two problems: visualizing schedules or predicting vessel routes. After a group discussion about what we believe we are best suited to address, we’ve decided to focus on predicting vessel routes from historic data.

Hypothesis:

We originally had two hypotheses, one for the predictive modeling feature of our common operating picture and another for the schedule visualization. But after our group decision, we have now narrowed down our problem to predict illicit vessel traffic:

NEW HYPOTHESIS I: We can extract insights from past interdiction data of the LA-LB sector to increase detection, and by doing so, we will obtain buy-in from our beneficiaries.

Hence, for week 6, we will extract insights from our current dataset of past interdictions provided to us by our sponsor, and show the corresponding histograms, correlational values, and heat maps to our interviewees and determine whether or not they find these models/insights useful.
