Week 6 Key Insights
This week, our vision is a single, interactive data visualization tool that allows agencies to strategically utilize assets, thereby increase the rate of identification and interdiction of suspicious vessels.
Original Problem Statement: Coast Guard Operations Specialists need a way to track vessels in order to achieve more successful interdictions of drug cartels.
Week 6 Hypothesis: We can extract insights from past interdiction data of the LA-LB sector to increase detection, and by doing so, we will obtain buy-in from our beneficiaries.
Experiment: We showed our beneficiaries an interactive map with data points of interdictions from the past 8 years. Each point, when clicked, would display information about the interdiction, including time, type of vessel, sea state, location, etc.
Results:
YES (LA-LB — multiple officials):
“I dig it”
“This is impressive”
“Right now it’s good organization of data”
“Show me more, more, more”
“I would put this right in the office”
But (LA-LB — multiple officials):
“Give me colors! I want to know where the hot spots are”
Color coding of heat maps was important to easily visualize trends.
Wanted more control features to visual data, including the ability to filter by variables such as sea state, time, location, etc.
Would not grab MVP out of our hands just yet.
