Marqeta hosts Berkeley-Haas MBA FinTech Club

Marqeta is one of the rare companies whose incentives are totally aligned with their clients — they make more revenue when their clients make more too. “Alignment of mission and revenue is the first thing I look for when recruiting,” said Blakey Larsen, a Berkeley-Haas MBA graduating in May 2018. The Berkeley-Haas FinTech Club had the opportunity to visit the Marqeta office last Friday to see firsthand what a career at Marqeta would be like.

After a tour and appreciation of the beautiful 360 view from the office in downtown Oakland, we heard from Omri Dahan, the Chief Revenue Officer. He shared the evolution of the business from early days as a single product to the full-stack platform it is today. One of Haas’s Defining Principles is to “Question the Status Quo,” so it’s not a surprise that Haas students gravitate to companies like Marqeta that are enabling innovative payment methods for the future of commerce.

For MBAs interested in joining FinTech startups, treks like this to visit companies are the best way to learn about the company, culture, and roles where MBAs can add value. Stephanie Pitts (Berkeley-Haas MBA Class of 2014) is currently the Lead of Customer Success Operations, a role she identified as critical to help Marqeta ‘s Customer Success team scale. Customer Success is a role MBAs are starting to gravitate to. From Blakey, “Customer Success is interesting to me because it is the commerce side of product — you work with clients to implement solutions and then bring their experience and learnings back to the product team to close the feedback loop.” Regina Chien (Berkeley-Haas MBA Class of 2019) is another example of the way MBAs can add unique value in FinTech startups. She recently joined Marqeta from Silicon Valley Bank as a Sr. Manager of Product Operations, so she moved from working at a bank to working with banks!

Thank you Marqeta for hosting the Berkeley-Haas MBA FinTech Club!
