I am a first generation college student. To me, this is one of the most important aspects of my background. My family came from humble beginnings in Honduras and they’ve sacrificed a lot to provide me with the best opportunities. I have been given the privilege to raise the bar for my family. I am representing my family name with every step I take forward. It is a badge that I wear with honor and pride.

The pace at which new technology is being developed is very exciting to me. New frameworks, languages, algorithms, and even devices mean that there is always something fresh to learn. The knowledge that a developer has now might not be useful in ten years. It requires developers to keep pushing their knowledge boundaries or risk losing their utility. The rate of development of new technology also provides new chances to become knowledgeable in a potentially novel field. It may not be unique to technology, but the fact that it keeps expanding means that it won’t get stale.

I want to be able to control the direction of my life by my own means.

I want to be able to give back to my family in a meaningful way. I got lucky that I have a positive affinity to technology, but even luckier that it would enable me to achieve those goals. Beyond that, I can imagine myself providing for my community. I believe that my ultimate purpose is to provide a means of growth and safety for my community one day. That’s enough to get me out of bed in the mornings and get my days started.
