How to Join the Right Team

You’ve just finished listening to a handful of great ideas during the opening ceremonies of a hackathon. How do you find a team that shares your level of intensity and needs the skills you have to offer? In this article we’ll share six proven tips on how to introduce yourself to a team and find a group you’ll enjoy working with.

  1. Describe your skills and your level of experience.
  2. Ask about the team’s schedule during the event and make sure the team understands any scheduling constraints you might have.
  3. Ask the team leader a question to help you identify if they are collaborative and eager or uncooperative and impatient.
  4. Identify if you just want to have fun or are hard-core committed to shipping something. Does the team share your sentiment?
  5. Express your enthusiasm about the idea and vocalize that you are excited to help the team meet it’s goal.
  6. Ask if your skills and schedule are a match and if you may join the team.
