Update: I’ve recently added an article about installing Arch Linux. It was quite simple to me that I had to reflect that work in this article. So I’ve decided to create two paths, one for debian/ubuntu and other for arch.

If you followed one of the previous articles about debian/ubuntu or arch you have now a very minimal and stripped version of Linux. Let’s add some sauce to it.

Openbox is a highly configurable windows manager but it’s not the only window manager available. There’s Fluxbox, Blackbox, IceWM, etc. And there’s also the full desktop environment like Gnome, KDE, XFCE, LXFE, etc.

If you really want a minimal install, without any extra clutter, using a WM is a perfect choice.

Debian/Ubuntu install

Install Openbox with the following line:

$ sudo apt-get install xorg openbox xdm

Reboot and login in your new display manager.
