Keeping assets on exchanges means you are not their only owner. Maintaining multiple wallets is time-consuming and prone to error, but it’s the only way to make sure they belong to you. Here are the best practices to help you store the top 50 cryptocurrencies.

Key 🔑 indicates hardware wallet support, rusty key 🗝 indicates lack of that option. Chain ⛓ means you will need to download full blockchain (could be tens of gigabytes), lightning ⚡means a light client is available.

⌘F the ticker you need to jump directly to it.

🔑⚡ Ethereum and tokens (20/50)

ETH, ETC, TRX, VEN, ICX, OMG, BNB, PPT, RHOC, SNT, WTC, ZRX, AE, DGD, REP, KCS, BAT, DRGN, LRC, KNC

Let’s start with the easy part. Store ether and standard Ethereum tokens on a hardware device.

Store on Ledger Nano S + MyEtherWallet or MyCrypto.

Use Trust Wallet or Cipher Browser if you need a mobile wallet.

If you need a multi-signature solution, look at Gnosis Wallet, it has undergone multiple audits and has support for both hardware and regular wallets.

Explore on Etherscan or Ethplorer.

🗝⚡ Special case: EOS (21/50)

EOS

Store on Ledger for now, but make sure to move it to a separate wallet where you can access the private key and register it here before June 1st, 2018.

🔑⚡ Bitcoin and family (32/50)

BTC, LTC, BCH, BTG, ZEC, DOGE, KMD, STRAT, HSR, QTUM, DASH

Store bitcoin and its numerous forks on a hardware wallet. Note that Ledger Nano S has limited capacity so it won’t fit more than 4 or 5 applications. You can safely juggle them as the keys are derived deterministically from the master seed, so deleting an app won’t affect the coins.

Store on Ledger Nano S + Ledger Wallet Bitcoin.

Explorers: Blockchain.info for BTC, CryptoID for LTC, Blockchair for BTC and BCH, BTG Explorer for BTG, Zchain for ZEC, Dogechain for DOGE, Komodo Explorer for KMD, Crypto ID for STRAT, Hcash Explorer for HSR, Qtum Explorer for QTUM.

🔑⚡ NEO (34/50)

NEO, GAS

NEO has zero decimal places, so you can store or transfer only full coins, despite being able to buy fractional amounts on exchanges.

Store on Ledger Nano S + Neon.

Explore on Neoscan or Neo Tracker.

🗝⛓ Cardano (35/50)

ADA

Store on Daedalus, move to Ledger Nano S when supported. Light client is 20% ready according to Cardano Roadmap.

🗝⚡ Verge (48/50)

Explore on Verge Blockchain.

🗝⚡ Steem (49/50)

STEEM

Signing up for Steemit requires providing an email and a phone number. We tried several combinations but couldn’t receive either email or a text.

If it doesn’t work for you either, register using Anon Steem and change the keys. The service costs 0.0042 BTC or 0.2 LTC or 5 STEEM.

Store on Steemit. Transfer to Savings for additional protection with 3 days withdrawal period.

Explore at Steemd.

🗝⛓ Monero (50/50)

XMR

Store on official wallet. There is also a light wallet called MyMonero and an Android app called Monerujo. We ended up using a command-line wallet which allows cold storage and extracting the keys needed for auditing balance. Ledger team is working on Monero support, but it might never happen because computing ring signatures might be too much for a simple chip inside the device.

Syncing the blockchain from scratch could take over a week, you can speed up the process by importing the latest snapshot. It took 6 minutes to download the 29 GB file and about 2 hours to import it in our setup. Use one of the command-line tools:

Explore on Monero Explorer. Note that you cannot see much here without secret view key and transaction key images.
