Gaming with 5G
The fact that 5G is still developing hasn’t stopped been reaching the peak with the technology. However, 5G is expected to be launched commercially in 2020. Thus far, people experience only a premature level of 5G.
Theoretically, 4G is brilliant. It provides a maximum speed of 75 Mbit/s which is enough for most of the industrial applications and solutions. Then why should we look for more advanced technology like 5G? Let’s list down some of its advantages over other networks.
- Greater Capacity(nearly 1000 times than the capacity of 4G)
- Lower Latency than 4G
- Greater network speed
- Allow access to multiple concurrent devices
- Detect natural disasters
- Lower battery consumption etc.
One major area that gets benefited from the 5G is the Gaming industry. Nobody wishes to download files days and days. 5G aims to deliver the best network speeds depending on the nature of the workload and user’s requirement. 5G is looking to provide a very low latency of 1ms meanwhile 4G offers nearly 50ms latency.
As gamers we all know many games on consoles, PC requires hundreds of GB of data and not only that for their long-term running continues fixes, patches and upgrades are needed. With the rapid increase of gaming resolution and bandwidth, as today’s 4K high-end games, the lower latency network connection is essential. High latency means higher response time. In gaming higher response time cause you to lose.
4K Ultra HD screens are already pushing the networks to provide the best streaming. With the rise of 360-degree videos, images for VR headsets start to create more challenges. Hence wrapping of the entire 360degree videos using HD resolution reduces its quality and resolution. Latency will not help to provide the best experience when it comes to VR experience. At the moment VR experiences are locally run on the high-end PCs, consoles and other standalone applications.
As I mentioned earlier, 5G is designed to provide numerous connections per square meter. Extremely high availability and reliability provide a huge number of connections to be managed. One way this might be utilized is, to provide a consistent gaming experience in eSports events where a large number of people gather and connected to the same game.
One of the exciting features is that 5G networks able to provide better accuracy in positioning. 4G provides accuracy within range 10m to 500m meanwhile 5G is capable to provide within a 1m range which is very helpful for location-based gaming.
5G is close within reach and subsequent to take an immediate effect, there is no uncertainty that its appropriation will guarantee a tremendous advance in the different mosaic of recreations classifications: shooting, sports, card diversions, RPG and others. Meanwhile, 5G connectivity offers a workaround. Due to the limited speed of accessing cloud networks, it’s unable to provide the best experience to the user. With the utilization of speedy 5G network Intel looking forward to doing all the high-end computational tasks in the cloud rather than in local PCs which help to provide a better experience in VR games.
However, 5G is still in the testing phase and not established as 4G networks. One of the major issues came across with the 5G network is its frequency range. Normally 5G networks operate in GHz range and it can get crowded with the signals sent by the satellites. Also, high-cost devices are essential to use this technology and as this is in the developing stage, security and privacy can be breached. In my opinion, the introduction of the 5G will be a great step towards the future and will be used frequently in the gaming industry in the future to provide a better user experience.
