Inspiring fans of 2001: A Space Odyssey everywhere, area man Ray Scott was officially declared an expert on artificial intelligence in a ceremony last week.
“Ray has an incredibly deep understanding of AI,” said fellow sci-fi fan Ada Asimov. “Once, when we were watching a chess match between IBM Deep Blue and Gary Kasparov, he turned to me and said, ‘You know what other computer could beat humans in chess? HAL. And we all know how that went for the humans.’ ” She shakes her head in wonder. “What a brilliant insight!”
In his acceptance speech, Scott warned, “Without proper regulations, what’s to stop self-driving cars and our phones’ voice assistants from turning into Skynet and enslaving us?” Ending on a solemn note, he concluded, “It’s only a matter of time until the robots kill us all.”
