What is Hacks/Hackers Africa?

Journalists sometimes call themselves “hacks,” a tongue-in-cheek term for someone who can churn out words in any situation. Hackers use the digital equivalent of duct tape to whip out code.Hacks/Hackers tries to bridge those two worlds.

Hacks/Hackers is a digital community of people who seek to inspire each other, share information (and code) and collaborate to invent the future of media and journalism.

Hacks/Hackers Africa seeks to bring all these people together — so that we can all be more effective in making sense of our world.

We aim to help members find inspiration and think in new directions, bringing together potential collaborators for projects and new ventures.

Membership

Membership to Hacks/Hackers is open to anyone in the journalism and technology space. It is however not limited and anyone with an interest in the intersection of the two is welcome to join the community.

Chapters are city / region based

There is one chapter per city/major population center, and if there is already a Hacks/Hackers chapter in that area, the founders will be requested to align themselves to that group. Major population areas are:

  • Cities
  • Towns

Depending on the size of the technology/journalist ecosystem in an area, subgroups can be created. Please contact pan-African Hacks/Hackers community co-ordinator Lillian Nduati to discuss options.

All you need to start a city chapter is in the Hacks/Hackers Africa Wiki Below:
