Bowness-on-Solway to Beaumont, 15 km

Day 1 was a flat and pleasant 16km walk from village of Bowness-on-Solway on the Irish Sea to the small village of Beaumont. Some of the trail is on asphalt roads, and some in green pastures and between villages. You walk from one small village to another, see many sheep and their poop, and meet people along the way. We saw roughly 30 hikers walking on the other direction which means they completed the Hadrian Wall Path walk today.

The path is signed at times, but not always, so be sure to use a map and/or GPS with tracking points.

First must stop was at a Cafe in Bowness-on-Solway to stamp our path passports. The Cafe is just next to the Kings Arms pub and across the street from thr entrance to the Banks Promenade, the formal wooden gate where the walk starts. Next stop was 9km later, at a small self service cabin in Drumburgh where you make yourself coffee or tea, and eat dome local bakes, and leave payment per the tarrif that is in the cabin. The homemade Mars bar I ate there was one of the best sweets I ever had. And I usually eat many sweets. I took some for the road (and left money for them!). Overall this was a recommended experience and the homeowner came out to greet us and explain about the place.

Next and last stop for the day was 5km later at The Greyhound Inn for coffee, beer and wine.

Overall, a great start for the Hadrian Wall Path walk.
