A Tale of Bravery

A child holds back the
heavy hand that would’ve thrown
stones at helpless cubs

unfazed by looming
glares, the child holds on bravely,
in determined hope

ugly snort follows
rough shove, a large scrape — cubs mewl
as danger vibes near

teary child gulps down
fear as mewls cut through soul
grabs hand once again

surprise stops next blow
remnant of soul flares — smirking
to save face, they leave

smile blooms rapturous,
soft hand replaces hard stone,
goes in search of milk
