In these difficult times when we must restrict social contact, our basic need for companionship has never been more evident.

I had a long and pleasant chat with Haiku Hub co-editor, Sherry Kappel this afternoon. During our discussion about where we’d like to take the publication next, I realized just how much I’d been missing simple companionship, even over the phone.

Merriam-Webster defines companionship as ‘the fellowship existing among companions’.

The definition, though sparse, made me wonder what this unseen thing is that draws, not only humans and animals together in fellowship, but other elements of nature too, each in a comforting, beneficial way? This meandering thought lead me to our next Haiku This! poetry prompt.

With 3 lines — 17 moras, in classic haiku form, writers are challenged to relate this idea of companionship to some aspect of the natural world.
