Have we already seen the most amazing catch in college football this season?
Poor Christian Milstead. The senior defensive back for Florida Atlantic did everything right while trying to cover Nebraska sophomore wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp on a third quarter play on Saturday. Everything right until it came time to make the interception, that is. The pass slipped through Milstead’s hands, giving Westerkamp – already something of an internet sensation thanks to hauling in Nebraska’s game-winning Hail Mary pass against Northwestern in 2013 – the opportunity to make what many are already calling the “catch of the year.”
Below is a shot-by-shot progression of one of the most amazing plays you’ll see all season, followed by what a few others are writing about the play.
“That was the greatest catch that I’ve ever seen in my life.” — Nebraska defensive coordinator John Papuchis
“Westerkamp, thanks to what could have only been some sort of spider sense or other heightened level of awareness, caught the tipped pass behind his back and kept both feet in bounds.”
—Micah Peters, USA Today
“First there was the ‘butt fumble,’ now we have a ‘butt catch.’”
—John Healy, New York Daily News
“It is never too early to dub something ‘Best of the Year,’ even if it happened on the first full day of the season.” —Troy Machir, The Sporting News
“Behind-the-back catches are the standard now thanks to Nebraska’s Jordan Westerkamp.”
—Tom Fornelli, CBS Sports
“ That was unusual to say the least. Just for somebody to even think to throw your hands back there to catch the football, I haven’t been around that one. I’ve seen a lot but I hadn’t seen that one before.”
—Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini
