Achieving healthy, beautiful hair is something that we all strive for. Plenty of treatments are available, however, not everyone has the means to go to the salon regularly. The power and benefits of natural ingredients can actually be found at home! Do it yourself (DIY) hair masks and treatments can be a fun and relaxing activity that can target different hair concerns, such as dryness, frizz from humidity, damage from the summer sun (check this out on how to prevent damage this summer), and lack of shine! This article offers fun at home treatments that can revitalize your hair and give it the tender loving care that it needs.

How to Start:

  • Identify your hair type: Various hair types have different needs. Figuring out if your hair is dry, oily, normal, curly, or straight can help you choose the right ingredients for your hair masks.
  • Perform a patch test: Before trying out these hair masks, you have to make sure that you aren’t allergic to any of these ingredients. Apply a small amount of the mask mixture behind your ear and wait 24 hours. If there’s no irritation, it’s safe to use on your hair.
  • Prepare your ingredients: Most of these masks will use common household items like fruits, honey, yogurt, and oils.

DIY Hair Mask Recipes and Treatments:

1. Deep Hydration Mask (Dry or Damaged Hair):

Ingredients: 1 ripe avocado (mashed), 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon olive oil

Mix all ingredients and apply to your hair. Apply them generously to the lengths and on the ends of your hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water. The avocado and olive oil provide rich hydration, while honey adds shine. Honey is also a natural antibacterial that benefits people who struggle with dry scalp and dandruff.

2. Volumizing Mask (Thin and Fine Hair):

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons plain yogurt, 1 egg white, 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Mix all ingredients together to form a smooth paste. Apply the mixture to damp hair, while avoiding the scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse it with cool water. The protein in the egg white helps add volume and body.

3. Frizz-Fighting Mask (Frizzy or Curly Hair):

Ingredients: 1 ripe mashed banana, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 tablespoon almond milk

Whisk ingredients together until smooth. Apply the mixture to hair from roots to ends. Let it soak for 20 minutes, then rinse with cool water as usual. The banana provides moisture and, while the coconut oil helps tame frizz.

4. Scalp Soothing Mask (Itchy or Irritated Scalp):

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons oatmeal (ground into a fine powder), 2 tablespoons plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon honey

Mix all ingredients into a paste. Apply directly to the scalp, massaging gently. Leave the mixture on for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. The oatmeal has soothing properties, and the yogurt helps promote scalp health with the fat present in it.

5. Shine Boosting Mask (For All Hair Types):

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons olive oil

Mix the apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Shampoo hair as usual with your regular products, then spritz the mixture onto hair and massage it in. Follow with a light application of olive oil. Rinse with cool water. The apple cider vinegar removes buildup from the scalp and adds shine, while the olive oil adds extra shine.

Other tips:

  • Apply masks to damp hair for better absorption.
  • When letting the mask soak into your hair, use a shower cap to trap heat and enhance the mask’s effects.
  • Wash with warm water then follow up with a cool water rinse to seal the hair cuticle.
  • Use these masks once or twice a week for optimal results.

Keep in mind, consistency is key! Have fun pampering your hair with these DIY masks and witness the natural shine that it brings out to your hair!
