How to hide thinning hair

Many people think of hair loss as a typically male problem. But hair loss affects at least a third of women. Unlike men, women are more likely to experience thinning hair than going bald. Thinning hair is common as a result of hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause. Hair loss is also common as you age. Skin concerns from ageing can be helped by using innovative skincare solutions like these.

While some hair loss is common, sudden extreme hair loss could be linked to a medical condition, so it is important to get checked out by a doctor.

If you are struggling with thinning hair, don’t despair. There are lots of ways to hide thinning hair, through strategic hair styles, styling products, and accessories. Don’t be afraid to try out different styles, and see what works best for your hair.

Hair styles

Getting a strategic hair cut can help to hide thinning hair. Styles like a layered bob, which adds volume to make hair appear thicker. The shorter length also reduces the weight on your hair, stopping it from looking too flat. A pixie cut is another choice that can hide thinning hair, as the layers and texture make the hair look thicker. A voluminous ponytail with the addition of hair extensions can make a ponytail appear fuller.

You can also experiment with parting, as changing your parting can hide thinning areas. A side part can hide balding areas on the side of your head.

If you are already dealing with thinning hair, certain hairstyles can make it worse. Be careful to avoid tight hairstyles that over time could cause traction alopecia. This includes tight ponytails and plaits.

Styling products

Certain styling products such as those that maximise volume can help to disguise thinning hair. Volumizing shampoos and conditioners can do wonders for thinning hair, particularly those with caffeine and keratin to help strengthen hair and stimulate growth.

Root lifting and texturizing sprays can add grit and give a lift to create the illusion of thicker hair. Volumizing mouse is another good choice, as is hair thickening serum. Additionally, volumizing powders can be sprinkled on the roots to add thickness and texture.

You can also use specific styling tools and techniques, such as blow-drying upside down, to add volume and body to the hair. Velcro rollers can also be used to add volume and bounce, and to hide thinning hair.

Avoiding heavy products will ensure that your hair doesn’t get weighed down, which can make it look even thinner.

Accessories

Lots of different accessories can help to hide thinning hair. Wide head bands can cover thinning areas along the hairline and crown. Scarves can also be used as headbands, for a sophisticated stylish look. Particularly bright colours can help distract from thinning hair. Hair wraps and turbans can add an element of elegance, and effectively hide thinning hair.

Strategically placed hair clips can cover thinning spots and hold hair in place, while adding a decorative stylish touch that draws attention away from your hair. Bun makers and hair donuts can help to create fuller looking hairstyles, to hide thin spots. You can also use a root spray to hide thin spots when wearing certain hairstyles.

Different hats and caps can also hide thinning hair. Baseball caps and flat caps are perfect for hot weather, while beanies are great when it is cold.

Wigs and wig toppers are a great way to add to your existing hair or to create full coverage. Toppers can blend with the hair you have, adding volume where you need it the most, to create a fuller look.
