The most frequent compliment I receive is for how “clean” , well balanced and neat the showcase of work is, on our community’s Instagram profile.

Having said that, this isn’t a bragging post.

While I am unaware of other hair accounts’ rules on being featured, I find it hard to imagine that they overlook these critieria.

Naturally, a common question I receive is “how do I get featured?”

Instead of keeping the answer to myself and having to answer the question every time privately, I decided to write a public blog instead so the answer exists on the web forever.

(If you’re going to document your professional growth, make sure you automate some of the common answers you find yourself answering . I decided to automate some of my answers by putting them all into blogs.)

Tip # 1 → Don’t Cut The Head Off ←

I thought some of the readers may find this useful because they may be doing it without realizing it — and that’s okay because it’s an easy adjustment.

The one thing that always came natural to me though, when I first started featuring photos of hairstylists art work, was I never posted a photo where the top of the head of the client was cut off.

I mean , it’s ironic because we talk about hair being the crown of a person’s head, yet we take shots of the transformation too up close and the crown gets left out of the photo — out of the overall picture.

So what can you do — like, today?

Start noticing how far you normally stand behind the client when you usually take a photo.

I would take a few steps back.

(This is assuming you are directly behind your client).

In doing so, within 10–20 posts, I’m willing to bet, your profile feed will look way cleaner & neater.

I get a lot of questions on things that take more then a blog to explain but luckily this takes but a minute and you can improve the look of your profile by doing something so simple.

TIP #2 →Collage Photos Are Nice But Unnecessary

They are too much work for a one time post when you could think long term…

I’ll explain.

My personal opinion on 3 — in — 1 one or even 6 — in — 1 collage photos is that they’re unnecessary — but my opinion also has a think-long-term side.

If you take 4 photos and commit them to one post in one moment in time chances are you won’t post that work again.

But, what if I were to tell you that instead, you can take that art work with that finish you want to showcase so much and go on to spread it out over 4 different posts at 4 different points in time — over a few weeks ?????

By default you now have not one , but 4 pieces of content.

Who says you have to post pictures all at once?

The work, although showcased from different angles shows a lot less detail than a one photo post.

Again, just like in point number one where I discuss how NOT to cut the top of the head off , in point number 2 I’m arguing that posting single shots , instead of collage type shots would not only make your profile look cleaner — but you also end up having different angled shots of the same finish that you can add to your neat profile over time — essentially you’ve created more content pieces for your page.

Snapchat and Instagram stories have created this 10 second micro — story platform of content so you can record a longer story in bits and pieces , where now you can also take the photos you’ve snapped and turn them into “micro stories” on your Instagram profile feed by uploading them from your phone.

Now you’re thinking long term…

… I hope these two very actionable tips will help you out and if you don’t like how your profile looks after posting 20–25 photos using my suggestions you could always go back to the old way.

However, if you do want your hair transformation photos to get into the Hairstylist Tribe queue line for upcoming features these are the first two things that we look for before anything else.

It’s very rare that collage photos make it to features because every individual photo must compliment the others and vice versa.

Less photos mean less variables to take into consideration which means a better chance exists for the submission to be feature ready — not to mention that it will show greater detail.

TIP #3 BONUS

HOW TO ACTUALLY TAG HAIRSTYLIST TRIBE → In the actual photo!

I don’t know how other hair pages collect their features and as much as I appreciate Hairstylist Tribe being hashtaged in the caption — the quickest way to get on my radar is to tag @hairstylist_tribe in your actual photo on Instagram (just like you would tag a family friend in a Facebook photo).

The quickest way for me to notice the work we get tagged in is when I see it as a notification on the homescreen in bright orange and it doesn’t get lost in the feed every couple of hours as it would if we were tagged in the caption or a comment.

Hairstylist Tribe isn’t trying to be the most tagged hair account out there…

…far from it!

What I’m trying to do is to make my life easier in noticing feature submissions — and in doing so it allows me more time to write quick tip blogs with useful information which hopefully makes your life easier :) .

At some point you’re going to have to explain to someone else how to actually use the entirety of what Instagram has to offer.

Hope this my explanation of easy-to-notice-tags will help you explain your way out of THAT question :)

Another common question I get pertains to the actual doing of the steps inside the physical phone app — how do I actually tag inside the app?

Hope this also answers that question .

Keep on posting and keep on tagging your work.
