What caused 2020 to be so terrible?

There’s no single reason the world fell into chaos this year. But one concept seems to be universally missing lately — trust.

People don’t trust anymore. They don’t trust that others will tell their truth. They don’t trust news outlets. They don’t trust politicians, leaders, scientists. Trust is absent, everywhere. People believe that half the country is out to get them, out to deceive them, out to take from them. They make decisions based on loyalty: based on who they believe has their interests at heart.

Intellect and rationality go out the window, replaced by emotion — fear, primarily.

America isn’t one country anymore. It’s several — a conglomerate of warring tribes.

The first question you’ll get from many people in a public discussion these days is some variant of, “where did you hear that?” Suddenly, you’re not talking about issues — you’re talking about who to trust. You’re talking about character. Ethos.

Trust starts with truth. And a culture of truth begins in each of us.
