Half the World in Eighty Six Days

Well, it was done, over. After 84 days of travelling around the world, it was time to head home. Being in Munich, we had a direct flight back to Singapore with Singapore Airlines to connect with our flight back to Christchurch. It was a weird feeling.

Of course, I got stuck in the longest line for passport control that moved slowly and then missed out on joining one of the other lines that opened up once I left. Typical. However, in some ways it turned out alright as it meant we just strolled straight onto the plane and to our seats.

This flight back to Singapore was probably the best flight of the trip. Firstly, our meal was gorgeous. To celebrate Oktoberfest, they has a special meal option called Kaesespaetzle — cheese dumplings with pork in mushroom sauce. I don’t think I’ve ever had something quite as good as that. Even the salad was great — the roast chicken and potato salad and the bread was warm. Oh it was a glorious meal. Not only that but our drinks throughout the service was consistent — our martinis certainly were strong and came with olives. Success finally — I can see what people mean about the good Singapore service.

Unfortunately our two seats at the back of the plane and these ones didn’t have much of a recline so we didn’t get to sleep a lot really, though we managed to watch quite a number of movies (I recommend Spy, not Pitch Perfect 2).

And then we were in Singapore once again. We had a 12 hour stopover in the airport so we wondered round, and visited the butterfly garden. While it wasn’t as big as the one in Dunedin, it was still nice, and a good way to warm up.

We also visited the Long Bar at one of the duty free, getting a free cocktail to enjoy, and a free tasting of some vodka. The rest of the time though, we were in a lounge getting some quite lunch, and then resting.

Next thing though we knew, it was time to go to the plane, prepare for takeoff back to Christchurch. It was sad, our last flight home. Unfortunately, our last flight wasn’t our best, with the plane freezing, the food and drink alright, and all the movies I had saved to watch not available on the older plane. Furthermore, Edd’s bag didn’t even make it as it was left in Munich! Its a shame really and put even more of a dampener on the return home. We landed in Christchurch, went through and we were back in New Zealand.

I think I’ll do another post to wrap it all up, but we were back. I guess it was time for reality.
