Golden Standard

I asked a friend,

who took his coffee black,
his whiskey neat,
and when he wore a suit
he wore it well,

“What makes a man?”

Definitively, he replied,

“The golden standard for
what makes a man is his
leading with love. All
else is up for debate.”

There are many measures for the character of a man. In my opinion, those that matter most are the simple questions that speak to his tendency, or not, to lead with love. How does he treat the waiter? How does he address problems with his partner? How does he react under pressure? All of the traditional measures of masculinity don’t mean much if a man’s composure doesn’t default to a place of compassion and kindness.

I want to write the words I wish were written for me. For those dark moments I kept to myself and insisted on standing alone — even though I never really was.
