Simplify.

The first part of the year saw me consciously focus on the concept of simplification in my life.

Not just as lofty ideal, but as an actionable task in my day-to-day. Not simply for the sake of less, but for the purpose of removing friction where there need not be any.

This season has been one of examining obstacles, some of which, at first glance, may not seems like obstacles at all. From the things I carry to budgeting method to the apps I use on my phone, everything is being examined through a lens of simplification. The filter being, “Does this provide more value than it takes?”

Over the days and weeks it has been tough, for me at least, to remove pride from the equation. Tackling long held habits and traditions means splintering the very facets I have allowed to define me for most of my adult life. It is difficult to discern where I am reluctant to let go versus simply making excuses to cling to the past; especially as someone who has a habit of hoarding both thoughts and things.

Clearly, it’s an ongoing practice — one I have yet to master. But a few months of focused effort goes a long way to building a new, simpler version of what my ideal day consists of.

Simpler isn’t always the answer, and in fact, it ought to be the question.

Simpler? For now the answer is, “Absolutely.”

I want to write the words I wish were written for me. For those dark moments I kept to myself and insisted on standing alone — even though I never really was.
