This article is part of Hallo’s new State of Diversity and Inclusion Series which will feature interviews with a wide range of professionals and thought leaders to learn more about the state of D&I, the progress made in 2020, and predictions on the trends that will shape 2021.

The following is an interview we have recently had with Kiona Sinks, Diversity and Inclusion Advocate, Social and Civic Innovator.

How would you describe the current state of diversity and inclusion in most organizations today?

In today’s climate around diversity and inclusion, I see the current state of most organizations now phasing into action. How do they move “PR to practice”.

How do the statements move to real transparency that impacts the lives of everyday people within the community on behalf of that company or organization?

Real lives are depending on companies to at least implement all the statements to create real tangible change for the communities in which they serve!

How has COVID-19 impacted diversity and inclusion initiatives?

COVID-19 has taken away the ability for most real time to reflect the depth of inclusion we see every day in the communities we once did before the pandemic.

Diversity + Inclusion work is all about how to move these unique conversations towards relationships where we see tangible results from individuals crossing paths to impact bringing these sectors together!

What are the most common challenges and roadblocks organizations face when it comes to implementing their diversity and inclusion initiatives?

The most common challenges and roadblocks I see organizations facing when it comes to implementing their diversity and inclusion initiatives is how to stay relevant. Diversity also should reflect in age, and how we endorse emerging professionals to bring in-depth knowledge to an organization or company that can help bridge the intergenerational gap we have as we look at the workforce emerging, and what’s coming behind us.

What are 3–5 pieces of advice you have for organizations looking to improve the impact of their D&I strategies?

  • Always expect the unexpected from your bottom line, and from the community as you look to make changes positively and negatively.
  • What emerging leader is helping you keep a fresh perspective on what’s currently relevant? Reflect diversity in age, not just color!
  • Who do you trust? Who is helping you set a goal?

What trends will shape D&I in 2021? How can organizations prepare for these changes?

How do you stay at the top of your game while not getting comfortable? Are you going to wait until breaking news stories hit regarding the life of Black and Brown people being impacted by law enforcement?

Start building out your strategic plan for Diversity and Inclusion right now. It won’t look the same for everyone else. What makes your company, YOUR company? Find your sweet spot! Let’s impact! Together!
