a seed is buried deep in earth
on the surface of the soil
there is no movement, no sign
of potential — of the miracle
that is hidden

one year, two years, three years, four —
the untrained eye is forever
impatient and imprecise
it cannot see, cannot sense,
cannot calculate
the spell that sends its roots
downward and side to side
until all is ready

in the seventh year, the bamboo
shows itself small — breaking into view
the foundation has been laid
and now what is left is to watch
the plant springs up day-by-day
until it towers over all

patient is the seed
patient is the soil
patient are the roots

watch and wonder
