The Rat Race

A Poem About The Lie That Most Of Us Chase

It was the race of a lifetime
Little rat spent all his childhood training for this race
When the time came, he started the sprint with high hopes
Young and strong, eager to take on the world by its horns
To his despair, he didn’t get to go far

Alas, he was met with a treacherous terrain that cannot be crossed by foot
But school never taught the little rat how to ride
“I’ll learn it as I go” he thought
He hopped on a bicycle and started pedaling
The fire in his belly kept him moving forward
Although difficult at the beginning, the rat got better along the way
To his despair, he didn’t get to go far

Alas, the rat was staring at the rough sea
But school never taught the rat how to swim
“I’ll learn it as I go” he thought
He jumped right in and started paddling his hands and kicking his feet
The rat grew tired of the rapid waves
But he didn’t give up and kept on swimming towards the shore
Now the rat can see land ahead
To his despair, he didn’t see the finish line

Alas, the rat was staring at another rat waiting for him on the shore
It was never a race
It’s a never-ending rat relay!
When one rat grows old and weary, another rat takes its place

What would it be like to win the rat race?
We will never know…
