How to Build More Discipline
One of the traits you’ll see among successful people, is that they have a high amount of self discipline. Whether it be millionaires, entrepreneurs, businessmen or doctors, the trait that’ll keep reappearing is discipline.

Why does discipline correlate with success?
Success and discipline can be found in the same easter basket. This is because people who’re disciplined can work towards their goals, even if they come with a side of freshly brewed boredom.
Doctors for instance, always seem to have an abundant stack of paperwork that they’re required to fill out. That paperwork isn’t fun, but because they’re disciplined, they muscle through it anyway. Their reward is worth it, because the industry they work in pays well.
In fact, the average doctor earns $195,000 annually according to business insider. The lesson learned from this, is that if one can stay disciplined, they’ll likely find more success.
What is Discipline?
Discipline simply put, is the ability to control one’s basic primitive desires. If you look at habits such as sleeping in, overeating, & avoiding taking risks, they’re all related to our instinct to stay alive and replicate. However, those desires are almost never on the boat of success, and people who’re aware of this, and capable of controlling it, are the ones who find success.
Tip 1: Change your Identity

I’ve spoken to several people about this concept, the idea that we will act accordingly to how we identify ourselves. This force of living congruent to our self identity, is possibly the strongest psychological force in nature.
The idea behind this point, is that the way you view yourself is how you’re going to act. For instance, if you see yourself as a procrastinator, then you’re going to procrastinate.
Think about it this way, if you have a goal, you have to become a different person to achieve that goal. In other words, you have to adopt a different identity, otherwise you can’t become that different person, ergo you won’t achieve said goal.
So the question is, who are you right now? What beliefs do you have in yourself that must be throw out in order to achieve your goal? All beliefs you have contrary to your goal, are identities that you stick to yourself.
So if you want to achieve your goal, you have to change the way you self identify. This helps you control your basic desires, because if you tell yourself “I am an entrepreneur”, then you’ll have motivation to act like an entrepreneur.
Tip 2: Create a Forfeit
Humans will do just about anything to avoid pain. It is for this reason, in order to achieve success, one must create a forfeit. In further detail, a forfeit is something that an individual will lose if they don’t accomplish something they were supposed to.
For example, I put $20 aside weekly. If I fail to do something that was on my schedule, as a direct result of laziness, I donate the money to charity. What this does, it create an actual loss for giving into being undisciplined.
This is one of, if not the best way to create motivation. A forfeit can vary from person to person, but if you really want to have a committed lifestyle to being disciplined, some form of a forfeit should be established.
Tip 3: Have a Schedule

This tip, in my opinion, is more important than the first two by miles. If we want to accomplish something, it’s important to create time to do it. Personally, I have many activities and goals to accomplish.
Wish these comes the task of balancing my time, because if I don’t, the activities will collide with one another. If a collision occurs, then I’m presented with an opportunity cost, where I have to decide which activity to choose from.
For this reason, I recommend having some type of a routine, that’s written down in a planner. I personally have a handwritten planner, but a digital one, like on your phone, works as well.
When we create routines, it’s easier to balance our activities out. With a planner that reminds of of our routine, we don’t have to juggle loads of activities in our minds.
