Drones Enabling Digitization in Construction: Data-Driven Progress Tracking with the Hangar Platform

This week at ProCore’s Groundbreak conference, Hangar is debuting JobSight, our solution for increased productivity and accountability in the construction industry through the use of the Hangar Platform for robotics and aerial intelligence. In this article I’ll break down how we feel drones will impact construction organizations, why we built JobSight, and the benefits we feel Hangar data provides at a high level.

When it comes to buildout on construction sites, a lot of time and money can be lost in miscommunication. In a perfect world, construction teams would have immediate, verifiable and ongoing access to information about progress at every part of the site. That world isn’t here (yet), but aerial data is closing the gap.

Aerial intelligence from the Hangar platform allows teams to access, process and analyze this information at any interval — before, during, or after a project — and make course-corrections in real-time, with the whole team working off of the same data points.

Many people are involved in finishing a major site: contractors, subcontractors, finance, team-members, architects, stakeholders, investors and more. Often, hundreds of people have to communicate constantly. Hangar delivers high-quality aerial imagery for analysis at intervals that allow teams to make real-time informed decisions, thereby cutting down on time spent allocating and re-allocating personnel and maximizing the efficiency of transporting material and equipment. You will be able to access and share high-quality empirical information whenever you need to coordinate efforts — or whenever you need to make a point.

Through analysis of aerial data, the construction team can learn just about everything they need to know about what’s going on at the site, whenever they need to know it. Access to this data can also be used to assess where to conduct predictive maintenance, as for example by using the imaging to detect deterioration or weak points, enabling better decisions about maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation while cutting back on the need for physical inspections. Some firms even use data acquired from Hangar for safety training.

JobSight’s Benefits

An introductory video for JobSight inside of ProCore.

Hangar’s JobSight Project Tracker is a team’s portal to visual records of their job site. Users get quick and clean access to site-specific aerial data and the information the team needs to do its job, and do it better. At Hangar, we know that a key factor in success on any construction project is Site Collaboration. Firms work with us to save meeting time, eliminate redundant communication, ensure teams are working with thorough, up-to-date data and enhance collaboration by connecting the field to the office in an established rhythm. Progress meetings can be complemented by automatically captured aerial data in Hangar’s insight-rich, easy-to-use JobSight interface. This interface gathers team members around the same information virtually, and keeps them informed and equipped to verify their projects are on task, creating streamlined project management and a more efficient site. It all leads to fewer meetings, better communication, a safer work environment, and true on-site results.

New technology is often expensive and time-consuming to adopt. Drones especially, with hardware costs, training costs, legality, airspace concerns, certifications, software, data processing workflows and more, can be complicated to deploy in any scalable fashion. JobSight is designed to save time in your existing workflows. We handle all of the logistics, you get the insights.

Actionable Visibility

Jobsight allows you to easily interpret aerial data and to generate actionable insights that teams can point to directly at progress meetings, in daily communications, or when addressing key stakeholders. Presenters can scroll through time and showcase site changes, present if materials and equipment on site correspond with the current plan, and quickly recap that data at any point.

More Valuable Collaboration

Whatever a construction management team needs to do, whomever they need to communicate with, JobSight allows them to be able to reference wide-ranging, up-to-date, and accurate site information. All information in the tracker is sharable. You can keep a history of project progress, pending issues, resolutions, and final outcomes, and get that information out to anyone on the team who needs it.

Owners & Executives

Executives in construction firms use JobSight to get the visibility they need to spot problems and control risks that can lead to extensive delays and budget changes. Inside the JobSight interface team, members receive chronological, easy-to-access updates and insights on a regular basis from projects working around the nation, no travel or data processing required.

General Contractors

JobSight makes available to GC’s all the information needed to coordinate processes between project managers, consultants, subcontractors, and your clients. The timeline allows tracking of project status so you can manage and more efficiently identify assets, reduce claims, compare estimates to completed work, and keep tabs on contractor schedules.

Project Managers

Project managers can use JobSight to develop accurate and verifiable progress reports for projects that involve various independent parties. JobSight retains a permanent archive of information-rich aerial data that helps maintain an organized, comprehensive audit trail. The timeline-based data helps give your subcontractors and trades accurate, up-to-date information to minimize claims, delays and disputes.

Engineers, GIS Specialists & VDC Managers

Our aerial datasets help maintain an accurate BIM model that designers and engineers can use to forecast outcomes for major repairs or facility shut-downs. What engineering teams take from this data can also help identify and optimize operations such as waste removal or access to on-site materials.

Hangar’s Perspective: Our Approach to Industry & Goals for JobSight

We believe that the power of aerial data is only as strong as the architecture behind it. At Hangar, we’re focused on building a robust ecosystem of technology — including our proprietary autonomous flight control system, cloud processing platforms and a global network of drones — to derive value from a combination of robotics, sensor deployment, visual intelligence and aerial data. Your industry will be to be able to take advantage of data at higher resolution, at lower cost, and with faster turnaround than with satellite imagery. The data is personalized to your site, at scale. Best of all, you can acquire data with no logistical challenges at your end: no piloting, no training, no purchasing drones, no processing of drone data: just the insights in an easy-to-use interface at your fingertips.

Hangar is proud to be the center of an ever-expanding technology ecosystem for aerial data acquisition. Our partners in data-processing, computer vision, and deep learning are helping us develop unique solutions for industry. We’re have built our company and systems architecture for long-term success with partners across technology. We’re here to innovate, drive new insights, and show savings at scale.

The technology that will jumpstart productivity results at scale has arrived: Hangar’s aerial data products deliver. JobSight will help prevent some of the biggest cost hits you can take in construction. Accenture states that today only 30% of large projects in the construction industry are delivered on budget, and only 15% of all projects are completed on time. That’s how much money there is to be saved in optimization. Insight-rich aerial data, presented consistently, will help firms achieve optimization results, and Hangar is here to work with clients through the process.

PwC estimates the market of drone powered solutions in construction at $45.2bn. Hangar created JobSight to deliver immediate value to project-focused organizations in construction, architecture and development. Our development goals were to

  • Save you time: Cut preparation time for meetings and presentations; cut down on the number of meetings you need.
  • Save you money: Get a full, clear perspective of site progress and develop business insights for contract management, asset tracking, personnel, and more.
  • Improve communication: Improve clarity of communications with team members; enable telepresence for team members who can’t be on-site; iron out project management and communication inside of and between organizations.
  • Make it easy: Deliver fully processed data, either via our web interface or integrated into your preferred project management platforms.
  • Make it last: Compare imagery and data over time, any time, for true status progress on micro and macro levels.

Taking the Next Step

Digitization is sweeping through the engineering and construction field incredibly quickly, and Hangar’s data, available in our JobSight interface or via API, is here to help teams make the most of the insights provided by new technology on your projects. All companies on the value chain will be trying to capitalize on digital technologies, but the ones who come out ahead will be the ones who can integrate digital data from an array of sources, including aerial imagery.

It’s estimated that digital technologies could reduce costs of design, engineering, and construction on vertical projects by up to 15%. Complex projects such as schools, stadiums, residential developments, and hospitals will likely do even better, potentially knocking costs down by 25%, with operational savings in the same ballpark. — BCG Analysis

We’re here as partners. Hangar looks forward to working with clients around the world on specific goals for important sites, and integrating into your existing workflows to build a feature-set that is perfect for implementation in the field. If your firm want to be at the forefront of the benefits of aerial insights, we want to be there with you.
