Compare schedules easily with HangTime.
The start of the school year is here again. It’s the time to enlist in new classes, meet new friends, and join new orgs. But with every start of the school year comes the same problem for all students — knowing your friends’ class schedules.
To solve this problem, students use a variety of solutions. Most students would ask their friends for a screenshot of their schedule to compare. But what if you need to know multiple friends’ schedules? Comparing screenshots would be awful.

The Next Best Solution: When2Meet
The next best solution to compare schedules is using When2Meet. If you need to compare schedules with a group, When2Meet definitely works. All you need to do is go to when2meet.com, create an event, invite people to fill up their schedule, and hover around to see who’s free or not at each time.

The Problem: Having Multiple When2Meets
The problem though with When2Meet is that you have to input your schedule for each When2Meet event you create. So if you’re a student with a lot of orgs, or have a lot of meetings to attend, When2Meet becomes painstaking to use. You have to fill up the same schedule every time, and you have to save the links to these.
Enter HangTime: A better way to compare schedules

This problem is what motivated my friend Mike and I to build HangTime. HangTime is a web app built to help students and student orgs compare schedules easily and schedule meetings efficiently.
How does HangTime work?
In a nutshell, HangTime works by asking for your schedule and saving it for future use. Then, you can add friends on HangTime, and compare schedules with any of your friends anytime. HangTime does this by overlaying all your schedules on one week view, and you can hover around to see who’s free and who’s not on different times.
How do I use HangTime?
Using HangTime is pretty easy. It just takes 4 steps:
Step 1: Input your schedule

Click the ‘add a class’ button and input your class’s name and other details into the fields. In case your class has an irregular schedule (i.e. differing timeslots for different days), you can click “Add custom timeslot”.
You can also include other recurring activities aside from classes, such as a weekly meeting or going to the gym. You can just leave the section and professor blank if you do so.
Right now, there’s no feature that will let you input activities that happen on specific dates, but we’re working on bringing that to you in the near future.
Step 2: Design your schedule (optional)

One of HangTime’s most popular features is our Designer feature. Designer lets you customize your schedule’s design easily. You can have different backgrounds, class colors, fonts, and other details that would make your schedule stand out from the rest.
This feature was launched in January 2017, and you can access it after logging in to HangTime at hangtimeapp.com/designer.
Step 3: Add friends

What would HangTime be without friends and classmates to compare schedules with? You can search for your Facebook friends, or look at the suggestions that HangTime gives you. Once you add a person, wait for them to accept your friend request, then start comparing!
Step 4: Make groups and start comparing!

How to Make A Group
To make comparing easier, you can create and name groups under the “Manage Groups” tab. Here, add your friends into a group so that when you start comparing, all you need to do is search up the name of your group, and HangTime displays the comparison.
If you’re not friends with the people you want to create a HangTime group with yet, you can create a ‘Closed’ group first. Then, you can send the link to your group through Facebook to your prospective members. They can then log in then click that link to join your group.
Summary and Detailed View
In the Summary View of HangTime’s dashboard, HangTime condenses all the schedules into one view. When you hover over a timeslot, it shows you which people busy and free at that particular time. This works best when you want to meet with a group of people at a time when all are free.
In the Detailed View, your schedules are compared side-by-side with labels for each class and class venue. This view works when you’re comparing ten schedules or less, and want to know what classes your friends are taking.
When would I use HangTime?
- For groups of friends:
Schedule your next group hangout in a snap. This is especially great for groups of friends who come from different programs of study or colleges/universities. - For organizations:
Store each department or team’s schedule in a group, and it would be easy for the organization leaders to just search up the group name and see the comparison immediately. It saves leaders time from repeatedly asking for schedules and having to store screencaps or When2Meet links. - For groupwork meetings:
Similar to scheduling with groups of friends, it’s easier now to compare schedules of people from different backgrounds. In addition to this, you can also see the reason as to why people are unavailable, which helps in prioritizing academic-matters.
Call to Action
There’s no need anymore to keep asking for your friends’ schedules. Imagine being able to compare your schedules with friends in just a few clicks!
HangTime just launched last Aug. 6, and we’re really excited to bring this to everyone and make student life more productive. Try it out now at hangtimeapp.com!
