“Sorry, but I like dogs more than most humans.”

All dog lovers know this to be the truth, in the same way that they know the earth is round or that gravity exists, but have you ever wondered exactly why we love our canine companions SO much?

Here are 5 reasons why our dogs have stolen our hearts:

Good for the soul

Life hack: when you feel blue, gaze into the eyes of a dog.

Have you ever noticed that when you start crying or you feel really down, your dog will appear by your side? They rest their furry chin on your lap and look up into your eyes as if to say “I’m here for you.”

Dogs are incredibly sensitive to human body language, facial expressions and smell. They can sense when you’re upset and will do everything within their doggie powers to try and help you feel better. And in their own non-verbal way, they actually do.

It has been proven that dogs can help people who suffer from mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Their constant companionship and unconditional love can often prove to be the missing piece of the puzzle.

Cuddle monsters

Have you ever had a cuddle from a dog? If not, why not!? They’re the best!

Yes, part of the appeal is their soft, fluffy coat (It’s IRRESISTIBLE), but our paw friends also cause us to release oxytocin, otherwise known at the ‘love hormone’.

This hormonal response creates a bond between you and your dog. Think of it as their very own love potion — it makes it practically impossible for you to resist them.

Workout buddies

Finding a loyal exercise partner is tough. Humans are flakey — one minute they’re in, the next they’re busy. Not your pooch though!

All you need to do is say the word “walkies” and you will hear the tinkle of tiny feet rushing towards you. If they’re REALLY well trained, their lead will be brought too!

Outdoor exercise makes you and your fur friend feel good and helps to bring you closer together.

Lend an ear

When you talk, your doggie listens.

Yes, the conversation may be a little one sided (with the exception of the odd agreeable bark) but sometimes venting is all us humans need to do to feel better.

Whether you’ve had a bad day at work or you need to rant about a useless partner, your trusty pooch is always ready to lend a furry ear.

A love that lasts a lifetime

Dogs run to greet you at the door when you come home. They dance with excitement when they see you. And they’re always deliriously ecstatic when you lean down to give them a cuddle.

No matter what.

They don’t care about any mistakes you’ve made throughout the day. All they want is YOU. They love you unconditionally. And that is the ultimate reason why we love dogs SO much.
