Find out if your business is speeding or, only moving?

Every sprint meeting or, weekly meeting, we discuss and we set up the milestones for the week ahead. We often measure the broad metrics, which indicate whether we’re driving the business well or not, but we might not be measuring the most important ones.

Metrics and KPIs are two different elements. Metrics are the ones, which need to be measured from the day we start our business while KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are the relevant metrics, which impact the business on a heavy note.

Wait! Why are we discussing this difference?

It might appear as a very common notion and somewhere back in the mind, we do understand but we fail to acknowledge often.

One of the most important key performance indicator is “Operational Productivity”

Why? Because, if we don’t know how our team is performing, we’ll never know how our business is going. Relying on standard metrics is good, but the root behind all such metrics is team productivity.

For a moment, think about these questions and analyze if you’re able to capture answers :

  • Where is your team right now?
  • Do you have clarity on how much time a particular task will take? *Timeline prediction*
  • How many human resources would you need to complete this task on time?
  • Do you have those many resources to finish within the predicted time?
  • Who can be allocated this task?
  • If the task is allocated, has the person acknowledged that s/he has the bandwidth to complete?
  • If the person acknowledges, how much time did s/he take to complete the task?
  • Did the work completion match with the predicted timeline?
  • If not, what was the reason? Was there any adhoc work? Or, was there any knowledge scarcity? Or, should the task have been done by more people to complete on the time?

If you had the answers to all, Congrats! Your team is speeding. If not, this is the high time you should start finding right now.

Measuring operational productivity not only amplifies our entire business metrics but it also helps in individual metrics. It gives us the clarity and missing cords where one needs to work upon. Since, the entire business is a team work, if we go deep down to the roots, we can predict how sooner or how later we can achieve things.

Clarity on project timelines, task duration, human resources, individual constraints indicate our growth as a team, and predict if we’re in the right direction and if not, then where should we focus and fill the gaps.

So, how do we track if the team is making more time within their allotted time? How do we ensure that their performance is maximizing besides we thrive our business?

And, you might be thinking, what can be the easiest way to capture all above, right from the day one of your business?
