附圖是網路上流傳的一張美國新聞畫面、以及對岸某個媒體或個人的解讀。雖然這是個負面的例子,但只要我們弄懂其中的奧妙,其實它也有寫作上值得學習的地方。

CDC confirms first coronavirus case of “unknown origin” in US

對岸翻法:

美國疾病預防控制中心承認第一個新肺病毒起源於美國

英文原文中說的「…of “unknown” origin in US」,如果斷章取義、並且硬把origin當動詞用,確實可以解釋成「某某東西『起源』於美國」。

但整句用英文語法來直翻中文,應該是「CDC確認第一個『屬於(of)未知(unknown)來源(origin)』的冠狀病毒,在美國」,也就是「CDC在美國發現第一個無法確認冠狀病毒來源的病例」。

但對岸的媒體(或個人)不知道是英文不好、還是刻意曲解,把這句話變成了圖中的說法「……CDC承認第一個……起源於美國」。原有的寫法要扭曲成那個意思,還真有點硬。

相信很多不懂英文、或是程度只能勉強看懂關鍵字的人會埋單,但意思完全不對。這樣翻譯的人如果是無心,那是英文不夠好;如果是刻意,那就叫做惡劣了。
