What has been and what is the role of the church in the black struggle for justice: then and now? How have key civil rights leaders like Anna Arnold Hedgeman and churches like Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church shaped the Black struggle for social justice and spiritual liberation: What is that history? “Black Girl Movement: A National Conference” is a three-day gathering at Columbia University in New York City to focus on Black girls, cis, queer, and trans girls, in the United States. Bringing together artists, activists, educators, policymakers, and black girls leaders themselves, this first national conference on Black girls seeks to address the disadvantages that Black girls in the United States face, while creating the political will to publicly acknowledge their achievements, contributions, and leadership.

Manhattan Concert Productions Presents: New York City Jazz Festival Featuring the Real Group

“Manhattan Concert Productions presents the 13th annual New York City Jazz Festival featuring the groundbreaking Swedish vocal ensemble, The Real Group, at Harlem’s world-famous Apollo Theater.

The Real Group is a professional a cappella ensemble from Sweden, in constant development since the formation in 1984 and is one of the leading forces in the world of vocal music today. The combination of perfection, personal touch and their wide repertoire has made it possible for the group to collaborate with symphony orchestras, jazz groups, pop bands and international artists. Members of The Real Group are Emma Nilsdotter, Katarina Henryson, Anders Edenroth, Morten Vinther, and Janis Strazdins.
