Colors, dance and music lit up Hamilton Grange National Memorial in the Summer of 2014 as the Garifuna Dance Company performed for the National Caribbean-American Heritage Month that year.

The Garinagu, plural for Garifuna, hail from Central America and have a distinct, long and complicated history unique to Latin America and the Caribbean yet, their history touches every aspect of the region from pre-Columbus Indigenous tribes to African culture to Post-colonization movements to modern day immigration.

For this Hispanic Heritage Month you should read up on this ethnic group. They’re super interesting. You can read Melissa Noel’s full story on Voices of New York’s website to learn more about the group’s culture history and food. Wikipedia doesn’t do a bad job as well.
