You remember Edgerrin James, right? “Edge” was Peyton Manning’s All-Pro backfield mate with the Indianapolis Colts and, one of, if not the best running backs of his generation. Well, back in the summer of 2006, he was about to start his first season with the Arizona Cardinals. Within three years, he’d be out of the NFL.

You probably remember Trick Daddy too, right? Prominent rapper from the Miami area in the late-90s and early-2000s — worked with the likes of 2 Live Crew, Twista, Lil’ John, etc. Most famous for his hit single “Let’s Go!” (easily the best high school basketball warm-up song ever).

How did Edge and Trick Daddy know each other? I guess “Err’body knows somebody that knows somebody that knows somebody.”

I doubt you remember the TV show Madden Nation — but it was an ESPN 2 show that followed around a handful of professional Madden players as they traveled from Orlando to New York, stopping at various cities to play live “games” in front of audiences. The show was golden and the contestants acted as petty as you and your friends would act towards each other as kids playing video games — a contestant walked-off set in the middle of a game, one guy absconded and didn’t bother showing up for his game, and another guy got disqualified for punching his opponent mid-game.

Each contestant had a team and was sponsored by a star player on that team. For instance, Randy Moss sponsored the contestant that played with the Oakland Raiders. As a perk, the contestant even got to meet and play Madden against his sponsor a couple of weeks before heading to Orlando. That’s where Edge and Trick Daddy come into play.

[If you haven’t watched the video at the top of this article yet, please do so now].

I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of questions about the Edge-Trick Daddy crib — let’s try to tackle them one-by-one:

1. How do Edgerrin James and Trick Daddy know each other?

Both were born and raised in rough areas of Miami. Trick Daddy was a couple years older than James, but Trick Daddy was a “young” 33-year-old in the video — as he had spent much of his adolescent years and early adulthood in jail and prison.

2. Why do they share a house?

[Shrug emoji]. Perhaps Edge and Trick foresaw the impending housing crisis and Great Recession of 2008 on the horizon and decided to diversify their respective investment portfolios. [Yea prolly 🤔].

3. Is Trick Daddy a person Edgerrin James should have been sharing a house with?

Let’s see, before his hip-hop career began, Trick Daddy was arrested at the tender age of 15 for dealing cocaine and possessing an illegal firearm. Literally the day he was released, he shot a man and was arrested for attempted murder. Upon his release from prison a few years later, he finally found a good role model and mentor in 2 Live Crew member Luther Campbell (if you aren’t familiar with him, watch the 30 for 30: The U, Part I) and launched his career as a rapper.

Verdict: No, Edgerrin James should NOT have been sharing a house with Trick Daddy.

4. What kinds of things do we KNOW went on inside this house?

By watching the Madden Nation video, we know that the following things went on inside this house:

  • Billiards was played;
  • Video games were played;
  • People stood when they played video games because there were like 30+ people in the house and little to no furniture; and
  • Sh*t was talked by Edge and Trick’s 30+ friends who hung out at the house.

5. What can we SPECULATE went on inside this house?

From watching Trick Daddy music videos and this video of Edge and his fellow Miami RB alumni, I can speculate that the following thing also went on inside this house:

  • A whole lotta weed was smoked.

In 2006, this Madden Nation episode with Edge and Trick Daddy seemed a little weird to me. Today, I can’t get enough of it — watching that clip sent me down a rabbit hole of other Madden Nation episodes from that season — it was a hilarious waste of two hours of my life.

I could write about those other episodes for days, but in the interest of diversifying The Has Been Sports Blog’s “Remember When” NFL Preview (yes, there are more of these mini-stories on the docket), I will refrain. However, before I bid you adieu, I have to show you my second favorite clip from that same Madden Nation season:

In case you were wondering . . . those same pit bulls got loose, hunted and killed a neighbor’s horse later that summer.
