Anthill Inside keynote, confirmed talks for The Fifth Elephant, ReactFoo Delhi, and more this week on The HasGeek Newsletter

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning got off to a rough start with the fear of machines outrunning human workers and the loss of jobs. While the ecosystem has matured, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to identify concepts and implementations which need more regulatory oversight.

The Niti Aayog released a discussion paper on the national strategy for Artificial Intelligence, which details the current developments, focus areas for AI intervention, and the way forward for AI including ethics, privacy, and security. If you haven’t read it, it’s a good roadmap to work on, if you’re buiding AI products in India.

Check out this excellent summary of the report, if you’re pressed for time.

This year at Anthill Inside, we’re looking at the technical developments in this space from two broad perspectives. Academics like Prof Ravindran from IIT Madras and Prof. Battacharyya from IIT Patna will be talking about Reinforcement learning and the analysis and generation of sentiments and emotions by computers, and practitioners like Vijay Gabale and Lavanya TS talking about Learning Real time object detection in the absence of large-scale datasets and product size recommendation for fashion e-commercerespectively.Further, Shailesh Kumar, Chief Data Scientist at Jio, will deliver a keynote at Anthill Inside on AI for India.

Is there an elephant in the room? Are there several elephants in the room?

We are told that one such elephant is linear regression. You think you know everything there is to know about linear regression. Data scientist Chris Stucchio argues to the contrary. If you have highly correlated input data, non-normal errors, domain knowledge exceeding input data, or other common problems, Chris suggests you may need custom hack tools to aid you with linear regression.

Too much math, you think? Don’t worry — learn from Chris and ask him questions, at The Fifth Elephant 2018.

On that note, we have published the first draft of the conference schedule.

We will be dissecting a lot of elephants at The Fifth Elephant this year — structural estimation methods, entity search, linear regression, and what have you.

Besides talks, we have curated two workshops — on 26 and 27 July — at the conference, for those of you who wants hands-on experience with latest tools and concepts:

Dates: 26 and 27 July
Venue: NIMHANS Convention Centre, Bangalore

Building data products at Uber

Data is the core of all things at Uber and every aspect of the user experience is powered by data — this includes systems that connect the rider to a driver, predict the correct fare for your ride, calculate in-app ETAs, optimal routing for Uber pool, restaurant recommendations in Uber eats, and online fraud detection. At this week’s HasGeek Open House, Hari from Uber will be talking about the infrastructure and platforms that Uber have built internally and the various challenges in managing petabyte scale data.
