Earlier this week, I read about Facebook making a huge bet on the rights for live streaming the IPL. And guess what? They apparently lost to Star India. Facebook made the bid for Rs. 3,900 crore and Star India beat that by offering Rs. 16,347.50 crore.
Facebook seems to be investing heavily in streaming potential of its social network. I never thought I’d say this, but apparently Facebook just didn’t put in enough money.

Open house on scaling challenges in the age of cross-platform apps on 8th September

Computer vision in e-commerce meetup on 9th September
On 9th September, we’re putting together a meetup at WalmartLabs to discuss about the application of computer vision in e-commerce. One of the key areas in which computer vision is currently used in e-commerce is in “fashion”. Our speakers will walk us through some of the applications and use cases of the same.

Tim Poston is no more
This week, we were (once again) reminded of mortality, and had to ask ourselves this question: what does it mean to lose a member of our community?
Tim Poston, keynote speaker at The Fifth Elephant 2015, and a very active member of the scientific community in India, passed away on 22 August 2017.
Many of us have very fond memories of Tim. Some of us at HasGeek remember him as Prof. Dumbledore — the man who could talk about data, shapes and geometry forever, using his walking stick as a pointer. It is heartbreaking to know that he isn’t with us anymore.
The Fifth Elephant is hosting a memorial for Tim Poston on 17 September at HasGeek House.
Tim’s wife, Rebecca Poston, will join us at the memorial. We encourage you to participate, and share your fond memories of Tim.
