Technology choices are political: Rootconf 2018 tells you why

“In IT security, offensive problems are technical. But most defensive problems are political and organisational” says Pukhraj Singh, keynote speaker at Rootconf 2018.

We were stumped when we first read this, but on hearing Pukhraj (in the rehearsals leading up to Rootconf), it all seemed to make sense.

Cyberspace is a complex territory where geopolitics plays a crucial role in defining which security tools and approaches gain prominence. Insecurity is the emergent property of cyberspace. Every interface is a surface for attack.

Is this reality making you feel insecure? Are there any solutions to securing your data and systems in this new world order? Yes, and the answer is to dumb down your security responses. Sounds counter-intuitive? Not really.

Join us for an exciting keynote on the big picture of technology infrastructure, on 10 May.

The fine folks at Nutanix have a t-shirt for every Rootconf participant — your Rootconf ticket just doubled up in value!

In the spirit of participating in the community, Nutanix will be present at Rootconf and they have a t-shirt giveaway for each one of you attending.

Struggling with defining a Continuous Deployment (CD) strategy for your company?

ThoughtWorks’ GoCD team has an answer for you. GoCD is an open source CD solution which has been built on two key learnings:

  1. Shorten release cycles because frequency reduces difficulty.
  2. Automate small parts of deployment first. Automation costs will eventually pay for themselves.

Curious to know more? Watch out this space next week, and/or meet the GoCD team at Rootconf, on 10–11 May.

Announcing first set of speakers for Anthill Inside 2018

Some of the brightest academicians in the country will be speaking at Anthill Inside this year. We cannot be more excited!

  • Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, IIT Patna

Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, former President of ACL- the highest body guiding NLP and ML work (2016–17) and current Director of IIT Patna will be talking about the art and science of making computers understand sentiment and emotions. You can read more about him and his talk here.

  • Prof. Balaraman Ravindran, IIT Madras

Prof. Balaraman Ravindran, Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and head of Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras will be talking about Reinforcement Learning and its applications. You can read more about him here.

  • Prof. Vineeth N Balasubramanian, IIT Hyderabad

Prof. Vineeth N Balasubramanian, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad will be talking about the state of explainability in machine learning/deep learning. You can read more about him and his talk here.

All three speakers will explain theoretical concepts in deep learning, AI and machine learning, and how these have been applied in real-world scenarios.

Don’t forget to vote on talks you like. And spread the good word about speaking at Anthill Inside with these stalwarts. Did we forget to mention that you can buy tickets to the conference?

Data is the new oil

As strange and paradoxical as this statement sounds, data is double-edged. You can’t escape reading the truths that data tells you. But you must also watch out for the boundaries you trespass in seeking such truths.

The Fifth Elephant 2018 — on 26 and 27 July — steers from the polemics of data to the pragmatics. The first set of talks at the conference discuss two problems:

  1. How do you leverage entity search, at web-scale, by combining structured and unstructured information, to better answer user queries. Can you build a robust QA engine? Uma Sawant offers an approach to think of this problem.
  2. Shailesh Kumar, keynote speaker at The Fifth Elephant 2018, poses a broader question: how do you leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) for India? Shailesh draws from his trajectory — of solving problems on the interwebs to understanding the ground realities of logistics — to throw light on what are the unique problems to solve for India with AI.

If you missed Shailesh’s keynote talks at the previous editions, watch them here:

JavaScript without JavaScript

If your head isn’t dizzy yet from all the paradoxes in this week’s newsletter, we’ve got one more for you:

Patrick Kettner will be revealing the magic of web browsers at JSFoo 2018. In his code heavy talk, Kettner will demonstrate how to leverage pre-existing libraries to get performance and features in your current web apps — a dream come true for every web developer.

This is not all. He will also talk about Houdini for building custom browser features using low level APIs.

And don’t forget to add your proposal before it’s too late, or is it too late already? Oops, we just said, we’ll not talk about paradoxes anymore…

Meta Refresh CFP announcement

Yearned for Meta Refresh last year? Its back this year, for real! After a lot of soul searching, we are happy to announce the seventh edition of Meta Refresh on 26–27 October.

Modern web development languages now offer capabilities to organize CSS better and to streamline design and development workflows. For this year’s edition, we are interested in hearing case studies and best practices on information architecture and front-end design. Do you have a good case study that talks about this? Submit here.

Deep dive into NLP

A key step in building NLP applications is using the right set of techniques to represent text in a form that machine can easily understand.

In their bootcamp this May, Anuj and Satyam will walk participants through key concepts, maths, and code behind the state-of-the-art techniques for text representation. At the end of this hands-on bootcamp, participants will gain a fundamental understanding of these schemes with an ability to implement them on datasets of their interest.

Instructors: Anuj Gupta (Director — Machine Learning, Huawei Technologies), Satyam Saxena (Applied Scientist — Machine Learning, Amazon)

Date & Time: 09:00 AM to 05:00PM on 19th & 20th May

Venue: IKP EDEN, Bangalore

Note: Limited seats available. Sign up now.
