What are you going to learn at The Fifth Elephant this year?

Data Science is becoming more and more ubiquitous, with it’s applications in almost all domains today. The Fifth Elephant this year saw a vibrant set of proposals from the get go. This year, we have talks on using data science to improve recommendations on food delivery apps, data science for e-commerce recommendations and, much more. Read on to find out the domains being covered at The Fifth Elephant this year.

We’re also talking about improving the collaboration between data scientists and data engineers, visualising complex geo-location data and using data for government functions and services such as elections and identity.

In fact, recent developments suggests that even the Governments are dipping their toes in Data Science. The Government of Karnataka has now announced the launch of Centre for Excellence for Data Science in Bangalore.

We have talks on Aadhaar, one of the largest big data projects in the world, and exploring the intersection of data and culture by talking about the right to privacy and the right to be forgotten in this age of ubiquitous data collection.

What are you going to learn at Anthill Inside this year?

The last 5 years has seen significant progress in many CV, NLP and RL problems. The advent of powerful GPUs along with insights from last two decades has made inroads into problems that were thought to be unsolvable in the near future. How can these newly solved problems be used for building AI products?

Anthill Inside stitches the gap between research and industry. Speakers at the 2018 edition include Prof. Vineeth Balasubramanian (IIIT-H), Dr. Partha Talukdar (IISc), Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharya (IIT Patna), coupled with industry presence from InMobi, MakeMyTrip, Reliance Jio, Huawei, Intuit, Stasis.

Talks at Anthill Inside cover the following topics:

  1. What machine learning can and cannot do for your organization?
  2. NLP problems like analysis and generation of sentiments and emotions by computers and building generic models for sarcasm detection
  3. How do you build systems for classification in the absence of very large datasets?
  4. Problems of explainability and uncertainty in deep learning and machine learning.
  5. Application of deep learning and machine learning concepts for online behaviour prediction, product size recommendations in e-commerce, dynamic pricing in mobile advertising.
  6. Building robust semantic search systems and knowledge harvesting from web-scale text datasets using large knowledge graphs

Workshops galore from July to August!

Whether you’re looking to switch careers, learn React from 0 to 100 in a day or just explore new tools you can use, we have something for everyone in the next two months!

React 0 to 100 in a day

Siddharth Kshetrapal, editor of JSFoo 2018 and an active member of the ReactFoo community is hosting a beginner level workshop on React in Bangalore. Arwa and Kiran, past speakers at ReactFoo will be conducting the same workshop in Delhi.

The workshop will cover the basic internals of React, before exploring how to “think in React”, the best practices and solutions to real problems that you will experience while building an application.

React 0 to 100 in a day — Delhi

Advanced React Workshop

React on it’s own has a very small API surface. Most of the magic happens in user-land. It feels like every month, someone from the community finds an innovative way of writing components. This is the best part about React — the creative community.

But, there’s a lot out there: Higher order components, Render props, Compound components? Provider methods? Learn which component pattern will make your codebase better in which use case.

Your instructor, Siddharth, is a regular speaker at javascript conferences (including ReactFoo!) and the co-organiser of ReactBangalore meetup.

Bootcamp: Learning representations of text for NLP

Think of your favorite NLP application that you wish to build — sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, machine translation, information extraction, summarization, recommender system, to name a few. A key step towards achieving any of the above task is — using the right set of techniques to represent text in a form that machine can easily understand.

In this bootcamp, we will understand key concepts, maths, and code behind the state-of-the-art techniques for text representation.

This is a two-day hands-on event led by Anuj Gupta to help you learn and implement end-to-end deep learning models for natural language processing.

  • Day1 will cover introduction to text representation, old ways of representing text, followed by a deep dive into embedding spaces and word vectors.
  • Day2 will cover more advanced techniques of representing text such as Paragraph2vec/doc2vector techniques and various architectures for char2vec.

DL and ML for computer vision

As a human, we see the world, store the visual information, learn from what we see and, recognize patterns from previous experiences. Learn to build an understanding of how to evolve real world problems using computer vision with examples in this one-day workshop. Sign up here.

Make your own DL framework

Nitish Divakar, computer vision research engineer at Cognit Semantics, will be hosting this one day workshop on writing your own deep learning framework in Python and NumPy. The workshop will cover the theory aspects of explaining the fundamentals and the various design decisions during implementation. Sign up

Math for data science

A solid match foundation is indispensable if one wishes to get into the data science domain. This workshop will help you develop an intuitive understanding of the basic concepts, by focusing on the rationale behind it. Participants will have the necessary knowledge required when working on data science problems. Sign up
