Meetups in Chennai & Kochi, JSFoo Hacknight at HasGeek 🏡, Kilter Open house on Friday and more!
The HasGeek Newsletter ✉️ — August 23
Hi there! 👋🏻
Earlier this week, I read that Amazon’s “1-Click” checkout patent will expire in a couple of weeks. As it turns out, this isn’t very complex to code, but they won the race to the patent office. They’ve currently licensed it only to Apple(💸💸💸), who uses it for app purchases on App Store.
In other news- did you know that there’s an annual Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship? It’s a global competition that tests students’ skills on MS Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint! #TodayILearned

What’s happening at our end?
Fragments 2017
We’ve spent the last few years treating development on each mobile platform independently. Android, iOS, mobile web — each with it’s own code base, design, release cycle, and quirks. With the maturing of the mobile ecosystem, we are now seeing a convergence of platforms and this approach is no longer sustainable. It is now more important than ever to have your app look and behave the same on all platforms and features need to roll out simultaneously.
This issue is no longer fragmented platforms but fragmented development practices.
Fragments is a platform for companies like Flipkart, Myntra, Google, and others who have dealt with the issues with modern mobile development to talk about their approaches, tools, and lessons learned.
Some of the interesting talks from this year are:
- Vijay Krishna Kudva is talking about how Myntra is building their Progressive Web Apps at scale. Learn more.
- Pratul Kalia, based on his experience at Uncommon, is giving a rundown on the inherent pitfalls and challenges modern mobile teams run into, and some possible solutions to them. Learn more.
- Naveen Kumar from Semantics3 is talking us through how they developed deep learning modules for both Android and iOS for their app Flo, and how you can use DL in your business. Learn more.
- Amrit Sanjeev is talking about Google’s new Android Architectural Components and will help you decide if this is the right solution for your Android app architecture challenges. Learn more.
- Siddharth Gupta gives an overview of Flipkart’s new open source networking framework for iOS, Swifty WebService. Learn more.
We will have a full schedule up by the end of this week, you can stay up to date by following our twitter handle @FragmentsConf or visiting our website.

[Next week] Anthill Inside open house on “How much math and statistics do programmers need to know to plunge into Machine Learning and Deep Learning.”
Surveys of participants’ needs, following The Fifth Elephant and Anthill Inside, reveal that a good number of programmers want to learn concepts in mathematics and statistics to navigate deep learning and machine learning.
Based on this feedback, we are organizing an open house on learning journeys, where three to four practitioners from the field, will talk about their personal journeys — as engineers, data scientists, statisticians and managers — with learning math and stats. They will also draw from what they have seen of their peers’ and colleagues’ experiences with similar learning journeys.
The goal of this open house is to help programmers understand how to get started with math and stats, and what kind of foundations are required for today’s times.
Amit Kapoor, renowned member of Bangalore’s data science community and co-curator of Anthill Inside 2017, will moderate this session.
Come with an open mind and lots of questions. This open house will be a fun one!
When: 1st September, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM.
