What inspired your career?

Ever since I can remember, I have always loved writing. For a while I thought I wanted to be an author, but it felt like there was a piece missing. I was playing an indie game called To The Moon one day and rolled credits. I was shocked how small the team was. It’s a weird thing to say, but I realized people made games and I could be one of those people! Games gave the additional interactive elements that I’d felt were missing from pure text. It also somehow seemed more achievable than writing a book.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on besides Instinction?

God of War: Ragnarök! It was the first title I saw through from pre-production to finaling. Professionally, I also went from being part of the testing process to designing and writing! I got to experience the game making process from another perspective.

What’s your passion outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m a foodie. I like going to local night markets, trying new restaurants, and of course, watching food-centered shows. When I feel adventurous, I bake or try a new recipe.

What’s your favorite music genre?

My favorite genre is really a mix of things depending on my mood. I like pop, pop punk, and hip-hop.

What accomplishment are you most proud of, personally or professionally?

Professionally, I am really proud of fulfilling my dream to become a writer in this industry. As a Chicana, there’s not a ton of us in the industry so I am glad I can help change that. Getting to work on a game that features a Chicana protagonist is an extra bonus!

Personally, I am proud of how far I’ve come. There have been many obstacles, but I’m in a really good place in my life. I’m happy.

What’s something you hope to achieve in the future?

I hope to make games that resonate with people the way my favorite games have resonated with me.

What’s something surprising people may not know about you?

I love tea! I like brewing and trying new blends.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The best piece of advice I’ve received is to put yourself out there, even if it scares you. I’ve had my fair share of rejections and obstacles, but I’ve also had some incredible wins. I think trying to destigmatize failure and rejection is important. Sometimes you’re in your own way.

What’s something you wish you had more time for?

I wish I had more time to travel. I feel there is so much of the world I have yet to see.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

The most important lesson I learned is as important as it is to bet on yourself, it’s equally important to have people who will back you up and support you.

What are some notable projects/companies you’ve worked with?

I’ve worked with Santa Monica Studios. I’ve also worked on the publishing side for God of War (2018) and Spider-Man (2018) as a QA.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in Southern California and currently live in Los Angeles.

What’s your favorite travel destination and why?

I recently traveled to Japan and I would love to go back. There is so much to see and there is even more great food to eat.

Do you have any pets, and can you tell us about them?

I have five cockatiels. A mom, a dad, and three babies. They are super cute and very messy. They are Cinnamon, Pearl, Pieds and the parents are a White Faced Pearl and a White Faced Gray. I have recently added a new member to our family Yuki a Blue Crimson Rosella.

What’s an interesting fact or hobby about you?

I like collecting Pokemon plushies.

What’s your favorite film or TV show, and why?

Parks and Recreation is definitely my comfort show. I’ve rewatched it so many times. It still makes me laugh. I also really like Laid Back Camp for its wholesomeness.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A writer!

What’s a career highlight of yours?

A career highlight of mine has been getting to write characters like Kratos and Freya.

What was a big hurdle you had to overcome in your career?

The biggest hurdle has been finding my place in the industry. It’s been a journey for sure.

What are your favorite video games?

My favorites are: To the Moon, Rakuen, Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak, Persona 5 Royal, and Stardew Valley.

If you could be any dinosaur, which would you be and why?

A feathered one. Apparently Pectinodon, previously thought synonymous with a Troodon, according to this quiz. It was small, cared for its family, and was omnivorous.

What is it like working for Hashbane?

It has been an absolute privilege to work with studio heads that trust their staff. Everyone I’ve met has been genuinely kind and humble. It’s a rarity in an industry that can be pretty ego-driven. This is a place that maintains a strong vision, but openly embraces new ideas. Working for a fully remote studio has been a great experience. It’s still wonderfully collaborative and it’s allowed me to work with people I normally would not have the opportunity to. It is inspiring to witness the passion and talent of everyone who shares this project with me. I am so excited for people to see more!
