Hashmap on Tap Ep. 102

Three business people are standing on top of an arrow pointing forward. Underneath the arrow, there are 7 gears with a person in each one. The gears represent what it takes to move the arrow forward.

“Every SaaS product is an internal tool for another company.”

— Arpit Mohan, Co-Founder & CTO at Appsmith

When you start your workday, what’s the first thing you do? Do you open Slack to read updates from your team, or check out leads in HubSpot or Salesforce?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then you’re already familiar with the concept of internal tools. However, if you’re in the process of launching a startup, what’s the best process for developing modern, internal tools? What’s the quickest way to unify teams and get your startup off the ground?

On a recent episode of Hashmap on Tap, Arpit Mohan, Co-Founder & CTO at Appsmith, joined Kelly Kohlleffel to talk about all things related to internal tools. On tap for Kelly, in this episode, is a cup of Cinnamon Plum Black Tea, and for Arpit, a cup of lemongrass tea.

Appsmith is an open-source framework that’s designed to quickly build internal tools and custom business software. With “out-of-the-box” integrations offered for 20+ databases, Appsmith’s pre-built widgets can be connected to just about any data source, and everything is controlled by JavaScript. If your preferred integration source isn’t available, Appsmith’s use of API data connectors makes SaaS integrations “super, super simple”.

While sipping on tea, Arpit shares insights on the way that Appsmith is simplifying the process of building customizable, internal tools that have the ability to connect to multiple data sources — a need for many growing startups. Arpit is no stranger to the world of startups. Before Appsmith, he led engineering teams at cure.fit, amongst others, and he offers invaluable advice that stems from these experiences.

Check out Arpit’s perspectives on:

  • Lemongrass as the “magic ingredient” for anything — including vodka
  • Developing a mobile game that went viral with over 1 million users and 3000 support tickets per day
  • Choosing Discord over Slack to grow Appsmith’s online community — join their Discord here.
  • Why Appsmith views GitLab as the “gold standard” for open-source documentation
  • Understanding that eventually, companies will need to build a layer to connect different departments and their silos of information
  • Why the “lean” startup model is effectively dead
  • Reasons he considers running to be the most effective method of “unplugging” from tech
