Why is Open-Source Important to the Market?

Hashmap on Tap Ep. 115

“We wanted to build a tool that we would use ourselves.” –Rick Lamers, Co-Founder and CEO at Orchest

Rick Lamers and Yannick Perrenet, Co-Founders at Orchest, recently joined us on the Hashmap on Tap Podcast to discuss what they do and how they do it. As data scientists, Rick and Yannick wanted to create a tool that other data scientists would want to use, and that empowered them to be more productive. Orchest is an IDE built specifically for Data Science. It allows you to build data pipelines in a simpler way without frameworks or YAML, just by writing your data processing code directly in Python, R, Julia, or Bash.

“There’s no one in the middle claiming anything anymore, just real tools, real software, real projects, real results.” –Rick Lamers

Rick and Yannick are strong believers in the world of open-source which is why they contribute to the community powerful tools that are available under an open-source license. People today just want to know if a product is actually going to provide value and help them. Product companies can no longer make grand promises for a product that can help anyone and do everything. Engineers today can know there is no unicorn product which is why open source has become such a popular option for products like Orchest. The question everyone asks a new product company is “What value can you provide to me?” Rick and Yannick believe the best answer to that question is simply giving them the product and letting them see it for themselves.

“The tools we use should empower us, not get in our way. That’s why we work hard every day to make you & your team more productive. “ –Rick Lamers

There are so many tools available today in the open-source data science ecosystem. With more tools comes more complexity. To keep the complexity out and keep data scientists productive and focused, Orchest leverages smarter tools built on powerful abstractions. Listen in to the episode to hear how people are finding value in Orchest by trying their product and reducing complex systems.

Hear Rick and Yannick’s perspectives on:

  • Data Science and the Value of Orchest
  • Business Model and the future growth of Orchest
  • Challenges and Opportunites of an open-source platform
  • “Data as an asset” vs “data as a product”
